SKS or Mosin What would YOU choose ?

Oh no, I haven't even looked at cleaning the SVT yet.. Non-corrosive ammo made me lazy ;). I like how easy the SKS is to strip. My friend let me put 40 rounds through his Mosin before I thought they were cool. I really like Mosins now. All three, including the SVT, at they prices they are at now, are really neat to have.

Make sure you watch online vids on how to field strip or you'll certainly lose parts... Multi-part piston rod may have been innovative, bug there is a reason they weren't widely copied!

apparently the german troops had no problems with using the svt40 and liked them alot ! ... so something doesn't add up

sks vs mosin .... no competition here, SKS alllllllll the way !

Most say the Germans liked them as semi was a step up from bolt action Mausers, and the German troops kept up on maintenance to keep them running. I can't even IMAGINE trying to actually strip one in the field on the Eastern Front... C1 and C7 were enough of a PITA in winter, and less small parts to a field strip!

That said, we're (fortunately) not freezing our nuts off fighting over Russia!!

on that point i'd agree ! svt is a pita to clean and would be savage in the cold

of the sks vs mosin.. i still would take the sks, as its not bad at all to clean.. and both are same in accuracy, i would not give up the semi advantage

Its between a SKS and M91/30 it would depend on what you want to do. I personally like bolt-actions more than semi's just due to handling characteristics. Both are pretty good guns, solid reliable, but not exactly the most elegant designs. A another advantage of a M91/30 is you tend to go through less ammo than a SKS (ammo may cost more but if you shoot less you save more). Both are good, I won't be the guy on the fence and say get both, my vote is for a M91/30 just due to action type. If you want a semi though a SKS for cost point and reliability can't be beat.

If I were forced to choose, and I can afford all three (at least now), it would certainly be the SKS. It just plain works. It also doesn't hurt when you score a non-refurbished safe queen.

I totally agree on the SKS is superior carbine to both SVT and Mosin, and if it was not for Stalin's backwards thinking and some other political bs Soviet troops would have been equipped with a variant of Simonov rifle that would have functioned better than SVT in harsh conditions, and was as reliable as mosin. There would not have been so many casualties on russian side, don't forget its roughly 10 million and counting. Anyway its easier to attack armed with semi auto rifle than with bolt action one and then the war would not have lasted as it did for Russia.
Yes German troops liked SVT so did Finns, however its the regular troops of soviet army that didn't like them and this was the majority, thus it was required to give them MN91/30 and relegate SVT to specialists and support troops, that had more time to clean and maintain their weapons.

I bought the sks first, then the mosin. The mosins are fun but I like the sks the best. Was thinking of a svt but reading about all the grief with the cleaning is making me think twice.

The SKS is my first rifle and I'm happy to have gone that route. At first I considered only the most reliable, at reasonable cost to me, firearms on the planet, that were easy (didn't need tools) to strip. If un-screwing something was involved in removing the stock, I didn't want it. Realizing I already had what I was looking for in the SKS, my preferences expanded. The X54 is something that should not be overlooked IMO, but the SKS was also the "gateway gun" to the others, for me, at least ;)

I own all of them - and first purchased the cz858 to start the combloc colection. However, my favourite performer of the lot is the humble M38 Mosin Nagant: Simplistic to the extreme. Not too long and awkward - or heavy. Great accuracy, due to not having an overly long/thin barrel bouncing against the full-wood stock; or being intended for frontline combat. And Compact. I can introduce anyone on it; have them comfortable handling it in seconds, have them clean it - and the most importantly - develop the "hurr, hurr" grin face; a la Fireball/BOOM!

If I could fix one thing, I wish the Finn's made M39's in M38 lengths. A, hardier, semi-pistol gripped stock with that funky pine-tar finish. Maybe... if I should find a spare stock, I will begin grafting ... Just simply ###y.

I would have to say the sks, cheapest semi auto on the market. Less kick, very common and easy to clean. The russian rifles are like pennys right now very easy to get and fun to collect. I wouldn't worry about buying one and not getting the other , they will be plentiful for awhile!
