SKS or SVT 40

Decided on the sks. The retailer had some nonissued in stock, figured that's a good safe bet for mail order. Now just need to decide in a good scope mount for those pesky groundhogs! ;)

Where'd you buy? Pictures?

Ordered from wanstalls. Don't expect to see the order till next week sometime. I will post pics of everything once I have it though. Hopefully a few range results with the iron sights shortly thereafter.

Edit: hah, they worked fast. Order last night at midnight, just got the email from Canada Post that it was shipped. Hehe, I was just considering adding the tapco stock to the order. Guess not. :)

Well SVT40 wins in my opinion. Yes I own both. Although I own 6 SVT40 and only 1 SKS (Russian non refurb).

The SVT is longer and not as hardy as the SKS. But it does balance well. In fact the SVT40 balances off hand better than the SKS. Light arctic birch stock and no bayonet at the front. The SKS has the elegance of a 2x4. That being said the bayonet and its semi auto nature make it still cool.

The SVT40 isn't hard to take apart. It's actually fairly easy. It has pins like a modern rifle for take down. Watch a Youtube video first. Its not hard at all.

Features: SVT40 has a removable mag (AK style) adjustable gas block and a built in muzzle brake. The rest of the features are similar between the two firearms.

Now let's look at the main complaint ie the length. The SVT40 has a 24" (roughly) 1:10 twist barrel. The 7.62x54R is essentially 308 / 30-06 caliber. The overall length of the SVT40 is right in line with modern 30 cal rifles that have a 24" barrel. Such as the Canadian version of the AR10 used by the spotters in Afghanistan. Also note that the barrel specifications are still fairly modern. Considering the SVT40 was used as a battle rifle and a Designated marksman rifle.

My thoughts. Get a few SVT40 rifles for shooting and collecting. Get a SKS for the heck of it and especially if you're into collecting them due to their price. But.. get a CZ858 for shooting. It's a far better rifle and much handier if you want to shoot a lot of 7.62x39. If shooting a lot and at ranges closer than 100 yards is your main priority then I'd get the CZ first. SVT40 second. Ultimately I could skip the SKS but had to have one if nothing else just to round out my com-block collection.

i would say like a few guys before buy one of each they are both so cheap at the moment. and in any case they both look uber cool on a nice gun rack

Argh..gotta learn to control muzzle lift! Finally got it to the range and am all over the paper at 50 yards. Gonna need much more range time. :)

What are you trying to say??The SKS is good, but not as good as the SKS?The SVT 40 is a fine battle rifle ,the sks is a good light assault weapon.I love the SVT-40 but to me it handles more like a 4x2 slab than a SKS.

@$#@$ iphone. ;) Sometimes it auto corrects or I hit the wrong button. Sorry. Edited for what it should have read.

The SKS is ok but not as good as the SVT40. There you go.

The SKS is shorter but it feels heavier and the balance for holding on target is better with the SVT40. I prefer how the SVT handles due to the balance point. Take off the bayonet on the SKS and the SKS would win. But then you lose a lot of what makes the SKS cool.
