Hi there I was hoping you guys could give me your opinion on what rifle I should go for, I'm not going to be doing anything nuts with it probably just light target shootimg.

It looks to be in nice condition so I'll have to ask the guy if I can get a liitle more quality time with it.

Thanks in advance

The SKS is cheaper, plentifull, reliable, very easy to clean. The VZ52/57 is of excellent quality, a bit more accurate, heavy for such a small caliber and very sturdy. The VZ is less easy to clean because of the annular piston but still not so bad. The detachable mag is not an advantage because mag are somewhat hard to find and the rifle dont use the sames strippers clips as the SKS and strippers are harder to find. All that said, i prefer the VZ over the SKS but now i almost only use my CZ 858. I said if you can afford, go with a VZ, its a solid value.

Marstar still had magazines in May. The strippers are a bit of a pain to find but they are out there - I found 50 at the local gun show last year. Slings and cleaning kits can be an adventure but they can be shipped from the US for not too much money.

You'll want the extra mags. I found the stripper set up on the VZ a little awkward to use - the stripper doesn't feed straight down like on an SKS and it takes more force to get the rounds strip into the magazine.

Magazines are either welded with a pin (gives new meaning to frankenpinned) or riveted. The riveted ones can be massaged or re-riveted if the mag is too tight to take the last round off the stripper. If the mag is welded and won't take the fifth round, you're stuck with it as the pin is welded to the tab that would normally allow you to disassemble the magazine.

A fun stop between the SKS and the 858. Or an XCR if you swing that way ;)

The mag from Marstar seems to be the VZ52 ones, they may not feed 7.62x39 reliably.

The SKS is very common, and prices will only go down. The Czech rifle is much less common. Amongst people who know, the price will only increase. Both will be easy to shoot.

I've had numerous ones of each.

The Vz is more accurate, and better machined. But it needs to be completely cleaned regligously. Parts are more expensive and are getting harder to find. It is front heavy, and ejects to the left. But is a more solid feeling rifle.

The SKS is more forgiving of how it is kept. Most parts will interchange no matter where it was made. You can get two or three of them for the price of a good Vz52/57.

I agree get them both.
