Sks owners - convince me

0.16 per round... if that isn't enough I don't know what is..

for example... 200 bucks for gun 200 bucks for 1200 rnds... thats 400 bucks for the gun and ammo the first time around...

it would be $300 for a crate of 1000 9mm so price wise there is cheaper but a 9mm rifle is anywhere between 600-1200... or more

and you can customize it and practice gunsmithing on it because it is so inexpensive. Ive done trigger work, stock sanding and modification, metal polishing, drill and tap scope mount, removed bayo, installed pistol grip and a longer mag (in my avatar pic)

like someone said its a great introduction for a 1st semi auto centerfire rifle, and it is cheap to shoot

It's like a Glock. You just have to have one, at some time in your life.

great so now I need a glock :D

Lots of fun, light recoil, accurate, chrome bore, cheap, customizable, cheap ammo, good feel (without bayonet), low cost accessories, good for introducing new shooters, easy to clean, can be used for hunting.... all for around $200.

Name another gun that offers all that.

The SKS has become the 10/22 of the centerfire world: it can't do everything, but it offers quite a package for those who like to tinker.

The only gun that is "better" in my eyes is a cz-858, which costs $500 more. If I didn't like my SKS so much, I'd probably have to get one of those.

I find they're okay just because everything about them is cheap.. but after using corrosive ammo i find it a pain in the arse to clean it so thoroughly. And it still rusted. Took it out once and i have to say its already sort of lost its appeal.

What's cheap about the SKS? Do you mean the price or the quality?

I find them to be rugged, reliable, and built to last. I really don't think you cleaned it properly if it rusted. I shot thousands or rounds down mine and never once had rust.

my friend if the maintainence on an sks is too much then grab a book on cleaning because it shouldn't take more than 25 minutes.

Now don't get me wrong, I own an sks, and love blasting with it. But it's appeal to me is the fact that it was inexpensive to buy and shoot. Never understood buying an sks and spending again as much, if not double the price of the rifle on (usually) crappy accessories. They accomplish my purpose just fine as is: giving me a s#@t eating grin while I dismantle stumps and large rocks on the cheap. I would much rather spend the moolah to upgrade a more "worthy" gun in my safe. Just my opinion. Still, everyone should have at least one!

After the sks you need to get a TT-33 handgun. The cheapest centre fire handgun out there. Army surplus ammo is available for them as well. Happy shooting!

i've owned a few sks's ..... still have one ........

this is not intended to offend anyone , but i would not waste my money on a sks , unless you just have to have a milsurp or are into collecting milsurp rifles ......

go find a bolt action in 7.62x39 ( there are more than a few company's making them ) , or even take a old beat up / sporterised lee enfield and convert it over to 7.62x39 .

i find sks's heavy clunky and inacurate compared to a decent bolt action in the same round .

a bolt action is also much easier to clean up after you have been shooting corrosive ammo through it .

DONT EVER BUY AN SKS....EVER... seriously there like crack, your dealer will know you by name and you cant stop shooting it, right now as i type this i am going in to with drawl.
.....m...ust... get...too.......range....with....s..k..s....W AFS CVD T

I don't understand people who only like shooting firearms, but would rather die than clean it thoroughly after using it; then are all like WTF? when they see it turning brown a week or so later. . .

Edit: try going to Starbucks, get an extra - extra large specialty coffee, and pour it down the bore and gas cylinder while the coffee is hot. :D

I got one. its OK but nothing special. if you have an AR than you probably dont need it. If you dont have anything sure go for it.

I would say this is close to my feelings. I bought one because a buddy has one and loves it. I have had mine out to the range once. Put maybe 80-100 rounds through it and it has sat in my safe since. It just doesn't speak to me in any way. I then bought a Norc M4 and CMMG rimfire conversion kit and love it, way more fun for me and rimfire is even cheaper than surplus ammo. 25 round mags are sure nice, too.

I do like the Czech ammo and the 7.62x39 cartridge, though. I have since handled a CSA carbine and loved the feel of it. That will be my red rifle replacement for the SKS and I am sure it will not sit in the safe unused.
