checkout the spike bayonet!....its post war photo though...take a look at his waist belt.....late 40s early 50s ....cant see his chine strap to well but if it were leather its post war.

That gas port was used on 1949 and some 1950s, but you cant tell the age of the pic just by the gun since there were issued out and used for a very long time.

very good point without a date this photo is imposible to tell the age of except that its late 40s or early 50s....the uniform he's wearing is the late war issue that they used till about 1955....the belt I've seen used by a few Officers during the late war and more widely used after the war.....chin straps are a give away too they were made of thin webbing during the war years....gota love old photos like these ....sorry had to get that rant out of me the great patriotic war is my passion and everything that go's with it.

Lol I should have scroled farther down the pict thanks. .....I found with the soviets when they found somthing they liked they stuck with it ...the pattern for thier uniform was first used during WW1 that I know of ...little changes in collor flashings and boards over the years but not much...wonder where a guy could get an early SKS like that?....say...has anyone ever seen a picture of the Simonov rifle that went to traials during the war? I hear it had a simlier and larger version of the SKS action ..I've looked around but never found a pict of one.

Basically, the text goes as follows:

Soldiers of the 128th rifle guards division leading operations in the streets of Budapest. Hungary, special corps, November 1956.

if we translate that to democratic english, it means Soldiers of the 128th rifle guards division enjoying their time shooting civilians

back to serious, does anyone have a rough idea of the number of sks issued for testing during ww2?

Oh come on! Don't you know that the glorious Red Army liberated the poor Hungarian proletariat from their capitalist oppressors. ;)

Oh, and as for your question, as far as I know, the SKS was issued to a small number of Soviet troops during the final stages of WWII; however, it only saw limited use as the war ended before many could be produced and distributed to front line troops for testing. As for the exact number distributed, I don't know.

man you want to see the big bro to the SKS....just go on google under images and look up AVS36 rifle...thats the one I was talking about that they tryed out, used it in the winter war in limited numbers and it didnt work to well.....far as I know thats the rifle that Simonov origanly built that he based his SKS off of.

Actually the PTRS-41 is the big brother to the SKS and it was in service 3 to 4 years before the SKS. :D

I knew about that one ....just didnt have the name for it in my mind at the time...what about the AVS36 though? the action looks like a giant SKS and was developed by Simonov.
