While at the range this weekend, I put through another 800 rounds through my russian sks ( maybe 1900 total now since owning rifle )

After opening the mag, the metal pin fell out

Im now able to load an entire 10round stripper clip, but I'm unsure of the legality of this. I didn't alter the mag in anyway shape or form, it literally fell out.

Is it my responsibility to take to a gunsmith and have it welded back in? Should I take it back to the store I purchased from?

Seriously, unsure of the legality?

You're now in possession of a prohibited device. Take your picture down, and get it fixed.

It sounds like the rifle is biologically rejecting the foreign intrusion into it's design! The same thing happened to a friend of mine's Russian SKS. I'm not sure if he got it fixed yet. Sounds like a recurring problem with the refurbs.

If you have a Frankenpined mag it is as simple as replacing the rivet with a new one which you can do at home for about $0.03. If your follower has a pin on it then a tack weld is necessary. This may be beyond your home shop abilities. A local gunsmith or alternatively a auto shop may be able to do the tack weld for you, if you disassemble the mag first.
It would seem that yet another option is available to you as well. You could drill and tap a hole for 10-32 in the bottom of the mag. Load up 4 rounds and then thread a piece of threaded rod up through the bottom until it touches the bottom of the follower, turn it out a bit,add some red loc-tite to the threads turn it back in. Cut off the excess rod and voila.

If you use a 5/16 x 1 1/4 bolt and double nut it in, it works perfect, limits it to 5.5 rounds. The bottom line it holds 5 and not 6 rounds. You can dress up the bolt head to make it look good and cold blue it. There are other methods if you are handy with a tig welder.

Friend has a welder ( not tig tho ) and I could easily do that. The bolt method seems to be an easy one too.

Either way, the mag is out of the gun and now in my trunk. Will fix it later tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks for the responses / suggestions.

nothing to do with refurb alone, its to do with the workmenship and design of the pinning and how much force used in loading, almost every type of pinning i know of in the SKS, new or refurb had the pin fall out .

Common problem with the SKS from what I've read on CGN. You can get a variety of answers about legalities and responsibilities of firearms owners and factory defects. Never saw any conclusive answers, but I would get it fixed as soon as I could.

They would love to bust you for this. They know that it's not your fault but they don't care, it's a numbers game to them and they want to look good.

This is exactly why I posted, I recall reading a thread here where numerous members mentioned a defect from factory doesnt make you liable...as insane as that sounded, I was hoping it was true.

Get it pinned before it talks you into committing some atrocious crime. The pin acts as a muzzle to prevent it from talking to you.
