Loved my Yugo SKS. Simple, reliable and an utter ball to just go out and plink away with.

Didn't use it to go hunting mind you, but if I had the ammunition for it I wouldn't have hesitated to do some 'yote blasting or to take down some deer. And if you happen to run out of ammo and a predator is eyeing you up, bayonet the sucker :D

AFFIX SWORDS! CHAAAAAARGE!!

Love the SKS, 100% reliability, cheap to buy and operate, low recoil, lots of dress up goodies available, tons of surplus parts available and portable enough to throw in the truck and not worry about bumping a scope or nicking the wood. I have 4 SKSs and will be buying a few more in the near future.
A few friends of mine don't like them, call me crazy for using them but I think they are rifle snobs, they feel it is necessary to spend $2.00 for every shot taken. Maybe that is why I can shoot 3000+ rounds of 39 a year and they shoot less than 1 box of 20.

If you want a good rifle, the SKS is a piece of junk. But if you just want a piece of junk that will reliably throw a lot bullets and last a long, long time with hardly any care, the SKS is a great rifle.

Its a fun rifle for plinking, gophers, and such.

I think it would be a good brush gun for calling coyotes. close range and lotsa firepower;) my brother has one with the intertnal 10 round, hinged floorplate or something like that, with a black plastic stock.

I dont think I would take it deer hunting though. I prefer a rifle with a scope for that.

Yeah, I'd say gun snobs are the only ones who don't like the SKS. You know, the guys who have a butler wipe their arse with $20 bills, that type of guy.

:p

I have one and I kinda like the ugly bastard. Not what I'd call a great hunting rifle but I believe its intended purpose was to fling lead downrange quickly and mine has never failed to do that.
Plus my kid likes to shoot it quite a bit and its cheap to feed.Actually mine prints not bad groups at 100 yards aswell.
I am (I believe) more of an optics snob than a gun snob so I'm gonna put a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x40 on my SKS sometime after Christmas.
If all goes as planned. :dancingbanana:

The SKS is a fun gun. It is not meant to shoot gofers at 200 yards. It is meant to shoot filled 2 litre pop bottles at about 50 yards. :D

It was made to go head to head against the Tokarov SVT-40 for a russian gun to be used by the Soviet Army. The 40 got the nod because he was a buddy of Stalin! The SKS was a better rifle for street fighting(against the Kar 98 's five shot long rifle).

The SKS is a good short range assault rifle of its day,get a good russian or Norinco and you will know they are not Junk.

You can get 145grn bullets and it makes a good Hog gun, they have a longer sight radius than MK'S AK47 and will out shoot it on the paper.

Still not saying much for acuracy, but not Junk(now nor then).

The SVT40 was technically a better rifle than the K98 for street fighting as well, thanks to the semi-auto and 10-shot mag. You are right though, the SKS was the better of the two for street fighting. Shorter range with easy to control recoil, relatively small size, etc.

The SVT40 proved it's worth though, it wasn't JUST a favour contract. Germans were scooping the things up in droves and were well-liked sniper rifles on both sides.

7.62Russan you know I had a SVT40 with sniper rails,it shot great with good recoil (about like an M1 garand)but I sold it because even ten round mags were 150.00 a pop and a scope for it was 375.00! It was a real trick to take apart and you had to adjust the gas for different rounds(weather also)I think it might have been over designed!

But Fed Takrov was a friend of Stalin while Simon was not! I think if MK had had the AK-47 at the time Stalin would have choosen the SVT-39-SVT-40 over even his design!

It is a OK gun for plinking with cheap brass, otherwise it is a junk, I am talking about Chinesse ver., however wouldn't mind to put my hands on one made in DDR/ East Germany.

Sks

Hi there. I have a Soviet Tula made Sks and a Chinese Military Sks. Both are well made and can shoot. The Chinese one I picked up at Lever Arms in Vancouver for $130 and it is not junk. I have read lots of reports of the commercial made rifles being pretty crudely made but the Military one that I have was built to last and it shoots great. Regards
