Given the "seemingly" rising interest with these rifles, and the rarety of certain types and lack of importing, let's look down the road 10-15 years. What are your predictions on the rising value of these guns? I'm not talking about the "dime-a-dozen" late model Chinese. I mean the Yugo's, Russians, and other historical examples of the SKS. Will they ever be comparable to the Enfield for instance, in terms of values quadrupling in 30 years??
What are your "long-term" predictions??

Yah. Never thought of that one, but in all reality..who knows. And lets not forget, usually whatever happens in Europe, (ie: styles, music, trends;....maybe gun bans!?) , happens here next.

I concur with inquistitor. They shall be banned the next time the Libs get into power along with every other semi-auto. They will give all owners a bit of money to compensate for the rifles going into the smelter.

In the USA, the SKS is very common in crimes. It is a leading killer of police as well. I would not be suprised if it along with others get banned.

It makes me angry on how the government chooses to deal with certain issues by seeking the guilty and punishing the innocent in their quest to deal with the perpetrators. They just banned those portable 'marine air horns' in Manitoba. I can see them feeling much more threatened by an SKS.....so that means.....you know what it means.

common? how so? from 1998-2001 an average of two US officers per year were killed by SKS , during the same period 58.5 officers died from gun shot so 2 out of 58.5

btw. AR killed more cops those same years.

My predictions for this gun ( and I'll stay away from a political answer ) is the supply will eventually dry up , ammo will become scarce , most of them will turn into balls of rot from neglect .
In the mean time countless people will have a ball with it .
Of course some people will collect an arsenal , never shoot them , and insist they have a rare this or that that is worth a ton of cash .
IMO in time I think they will become the cheapest firearm on the planet bar none , less than they sold for at their cheapest .
I love the gun , don't get me wrong , I'll always own and enjoy one but as far as long term collectibility and value I don't see it .

we will see. I remember talking to old timers about how they were buying crates of milsurps for 50$ or less per gun.

The SKS will probably never become a 1000$ gun, however it can only (slowly) rise in price as long as it remains legal to shoot it.

Take for instance the FAL, whose price seems to be going nowhere now that it is a dedicated wall-hanger. Same will happen to the SKS should that day ever come.

josh: i saw my FN/FAL go to restricted and then ban, altho i dont believe that will happen to the SKS cos its totally different , different in (evil) looks and mechanism.

having said that but should the SKS get ban, the yugo and russian will drop more in value than the "dime-a-dozen" chinese SKS. when you are at the 1st floor, the ground isnt far to fall to.:D

then you wish you enjoyed your yugo and the russian when you were allowed to fire them rather than baby them for a rise in future value.

in summary, dont look at them as an investment , unless you are buying a rare SKS now otherwise just enjoy them.

I agree with Curtton. Just use it and enjoy. Let's say it does appreciate in value, and it appreciates four times it's original worth - which is being generous - will that make you rich? Even if it appreciates that much it won't really make an impact on your life (unless you have 1000 of them stored in your basement). When your on your death bed, are you going to say 'Boy, I'm glad I never shot that shiney SKS' or will you say "Gee, wish I would have shot that thing and had fun in my life!" Myself, I'm going for the fun and enjoy life factor - as Jim Morrison said "The future is uncertain and the end is always near"......so I suggest get out to the range with a case of M43 ball.:)

I'd also like to see these sources on these stats on what type of firearm is being used in crimes and homicides etc, as I have never seen such a list.

I just read this article saying that the SKS is "cheap and deadly".

It is a leading killer of police (who were wearing body armour) along with other longarms.

2 out of 58.5 fatality by SKS , the stats dont match "leading killer of police" , obviously your report are made up by special interest groups whose interest are to have norinco products/SKS remain ban from importation, clinton impose a 10 year ban in 1994 so these groups were successful in getting president bush to continue the ban and also (i believe) from other countries.

Yeah I believe it was a biased report. I would not doubt if the Liberals got rid of handguns and most rifles. They will look at the Japanese and European gun crimes and compare them to Canada.

going back to the original subject of predicting the value . i dont believe anyone can predict that far (10-30 years) into the future especially when you have to take government intervention into consideration but i can tell you what happened in the US since the ban on norinco import. the price of chinese SKS sky rocketed.

when clinton impose a IMPORTATION ban on norinco products in 1994 the price of a regular new SKS went from $65 to over $200 now and the para/D models from $75 to over $350 , thats a 3X and 4.5X increase while the yugo and the russian gain 2X during the same period. today yugo sells for the same price as the regular norinco and the russian sells for the same price as norinco para/D models.

ofcos the result would not be the same here in canada cos our ban prohibits the use of the rifle.
