So my wife got me a 1951 russian sks for christmas, i took it apart, cleaned all the junk off of it (tried to get into the bolt, but couldn't f:P: ) put it all back together, took it out into the frigid cold and fired off 10 rounds. and then it stopped firing, i loaded the round pulled the trigger and it just went click. Weird, ejected it, and no mark on the primer at all, tried it a few more times with the same results, loaded it again, shot two, then back to the same thing. Whats going on?

If you mean where it sits in the bolt, no, i tried and tried to knock the pin out to no avail, would that likely be the cause? and if so, is there anything that'd help me get that darn pin out?

If you can't get it out at least shoot brake cleaner through it to remove any oil, grease, or crud buildups.

If it's not leaving a mark in the primer my money is on the pin being stuck in place due to frozen grease or oil.

good thing its stuck where it did or you would be in for the dreaded slam fire... carefull

Google "sks popped primer" that is what is happening most likely I had the same problem, have to remove the pin, easy enough with a punch over a 2x4 with a hole drilled through it.

Take tat bolt apart, hammer and a pin may be required. Clean out the firing pin channel, and keep it dry (no lube). Also, inspect the pin to make sure its not damaged or bent.

cleaning solves the problem, the russians would have had good reason to do away with the spring loaded firing pin. I always use a light film of oil on mine and clean it peridoically. Metal on metal is bad, the steel might be very hard but it will wear. It takes alot of firing to get that channel so dirty that it seizes the firing pin

Go to surplusrifle.com/sks/index.asp ;then click on SKS in the left column, then in the right column click SKS Bolt disassembly / reassembly. It will show you how to take it apart so you can properly clean it. Keep it dry. ;)

Not an issue ...

Hi,

I've read all of this stuff many times, but still wasn't "up" to dismantling/thumping the frigging bolt.

(I had two engineers over for supper, just so we could dismantle the rifle ... just enough to clean it.)

We left the gas piston alone. Dismantled and soaked/wiped everything else. Four guys, a bit of Scotch and Varsol (don't confuse them containers) and much joviality, and an hour.

The pin in the bolt didn't rattle. Try some Break-Free. (Seems a lot like brake-cleaner, but that's all I had.)

That's better.

Repeat a few more times.

It seems to be running like a clock now.

Prepare to get some wise-ass smarter-than-you comments ... I did in earlier naive posts/questions ... but most folks here are knowledgeable and helpful.

you need to clean the firing pin channel

You need to hit that retaining pin pretty hard or use a small arbor press. Dont waste your money that spring loaded firing pin it is a total gimmick. The rifle will NEVER work right untill you get all that crap out of there. I chucked my firing pin in the lathe and took .0015 off of the diameter of the area that bears on the bolt . Sorry there is no other good option to get the crap out but to take it apart. swing hard

Break-Free

Like I said, we just blasted the the area at the front of the bolt with Break-Free. Blast. Wait. Shake. Repeat.Repeat. After a few minutes the firing pin went from its mooshy/goopy static state to .... rattling freely.

And this was a brand new stored-since-the-1960's dipped in cosmoline Chinese military SKS ... just got it from Marstar.

What I don't get ... and I know this sounds stupid ... WTF did the goop inside actually go?

Am I correct in assuming that aerosol Powder-Blast Break Free (I bought it for my AR15) is similar to the brake cleaner that people are talking about?

J MIL 20; If you`re having issues getting the retaining pin out,I would recommend soaking in solvent and blowing compressed air from the tip of the firing pin thru the bolt untill you can no longer get junk out of the bolt. This process will need several `soakings but will eventually get all the crud out of the bolt and firing pin assembly.
