So anyways my friend was at our last service rifle match.
20 rounds so far so good, 21 his tasco mag drops out!!

we call a cease fire and he tries to a field assess to see whats wrong.
The pin that holds the mag release broke and disappeared.
So with those parts gone, the range officer gives him the option to single load the rest of the match or count what he has and walk off the range.
He goes with single loading. he gets through 2 rounds then the trigger will not fire... so he walks off the range and we finish the match.

Anyways we pulled it apart today and we foresure need a new pin to fix the mag release. But we pulled apart everything and for the life of us we can't get the trigger to fire. Now half the issues is that he hasn't maintained the sks has well has he should, it does have some minor rust. the trigger will manual fire by playing with the internals, but when we try to use the trigger nothing happens.

Some things to note he has an upgraded stock. and he is using tasco mags.
its a Russian SKS

Any ideas on why the trigger isn't working? and is it an easy repair?
or is it a F*ck it situation? and sell it as a part gun? and if i'm selling it as a part gun whats it worth (with all original parts not the upgraded stock)

When the mag release pin fell out, did the sear spring go missing too? Sounds like the most likely event as the sear spring is connected to the mag release which the pin holds in

I agree with starting by bringing it back to factory. Also, IIRC that mag latch has something to do with the trigger assembly as well. Replace the pin and make sure the springs are all there

X2, that pin will hold the spring in place that holds the sear where it needs to be. replace the pin before giving up on it. Probably a simple fix.

IIRC the spring for the mag release and the missing pin (which holds it and the mag release in place) also work with the trigger group. The spring resets the sear after each trigger pull as well as applying pressure to the mag release. The pin also holds the front end of the trigger group in place and if it is not exactly in the right spot; the bolt follower / disconnecter will not be alligned and will not allow the trigger to move the sear.

Long story short you will not be able to fire it without that pin in place.

Edit: some of you guys beat me to it when I was pulling mine apart.

If parts of the trigger group are missing, I would suggest replacing them.
If you are missing things like a sear (37), the trigger won't work as well as it should.
Without that pin at the front (38), changing mags may not solve your problems, since the mag release (35) will fall off.

Leave it stock. It'll run like a watch. If Simonov wanted it to run with a cheap plastic after market mag he would have designed it that way. Need a mag fed SKS? - get an SKS-D. The Chinese put a little thought and effort into those and they more or less work.

it comes down to price for getting the tapco mag vs an sks-d

just replace the pin (and make sure its tight) and you are back in business as usual

That pin retains both the mag. catch and the sear. The spring powers both. Replace all missing parts, reassemble in the original stock with the original magazine, and I bet it will work just fine.

:agree:
Without that mag release the spring that pushes the sear in will not allow the dissconector to dis-engauge. Hence why the hammer won't drop. Another reason why I was hoping that a company would make the same TAPCO part but instead of plastic, it would be made from metal.
Also once your buddy get's his rig up and going you should tell him to stick to the stripper clips. Since we live in Canada and aren't allowed more than 5 rounds, mag changes vs stripper clips are about the same speed and he won't worry about FUBAR'ing his rig again.
;)

Thanks everyone for the help.

I told him not to buy that crap stock and mag, and keep it a red rifle, but what can u do.
funny part is he has 1 mag and still uses stripper clips.... yeah i know whats the point.

Anyways I will update u when i get him to buy a new pin, Thanks for the advise and the help.
