I am probably in the wrong forum but cant find where to post so mods feel free to move to proper forum.

I have a regular Chinese SKS and want to know if If i could make it a single shot safely.
I know on the Yugos there is a gas shut off valve but what can i do to do this to a chinese one?

Single shot? Could you explain a little more?

The gun is already semi-automatic, are you trying to make it not cycle automatically/ manual ejection of spent casings?

So just take out the piston rod and it will only cycle one round?
Yes i find my sks is more accurate when i only load one at a time.

That's correct. Without the piston, the bolt will not cycle unless you manually move it.
 
Removing the gas piston does turn your SKS into a single shot, but I found that mine was somewhat less accurate without the gas piston :redface: I figured it was because the propulsion gases gushed into the empty gas tube as soon as the bullet passed the gas port, venting rapidly to atmosphere instead of being resisted by the gas piston. If you had a chrony you could measure the difference the gas piston makes in velocity, I'd be willing to bet that it's a big difference (like 300~500fps). Maybe it's the drop in velocity that usually makes SKS's more accurate? I dunno.
 
I think what was mentioned by powerbybeer was correct. I tried a few times shooting without piston and the results were less than satisfactory. And another thing I've found was that the first shot you fire after you clean the barrel will be less accurate, and the trigger will be tighter too. But after the first shot the trigger just smooths out.
 
I have found the same results after I have cleaned mine.

The SKS and the AK family are brilliant designs, in a way they utilize the muck, and grit of normal use as a lubricant. :D

;) See, it's nice to have it semi auto while hunting. First shot warms up if it doesn't do the job, then second one does the job almost for sure.:eek: And you don't have to take another thought to send the 3rd out if the game doesn't go down. Oh someone will call it unethical....

Prob' Same folks that prob' hunt Deer with a varmint cartridge like the .223, or a 410 slug, or pistol cartridges in Carbines. :rolleyes: :p

Also Hunting is a life skill that cannot be bought, only earned with mud on ones boots, and allot of time shooting with the rifle. :D

I agree, the SKS is a pretty slick design. That's part of the reason I like 'em so much. You can leave it in the mud overnight & still put 5 rounds through it in the morning, no problem. In fact, I believe this was one of the torture tests done by the soviets before approving the design for their military :runaway: No facts to support that, though.
