Good morning all

I took the plunge and bought a Russian SKS and a crate of ammo from target sports last night, I had originally wanted an 858 but they were out of stock. Since I can only shoot this at an outdoor range I belong too and rarely get up there ( maybe four times a year ) it made more sense for this purchase then the 858.

Anyway, Ive gone through all the sks threads / basics ( sights, cleaning, field strip and so on ) and gone ahead and purchased Gunzilla CLP from neit arms.

However, I would like also like to get

1) bi pod that that mounts to the bayonet lug for quick and easy installation. Would this one from fabsports be ok?

2) a scope mount ( already have a scope from my M14 )

3) Aftermarket stock - was looking at the ones from sksman.. are there any Canadian suppliers?

Does anyone have any recommendations on what set-ups work best for a somewhat novice shooter? I see there are several different types of mounts for the sks so I'm unsure of which one to get. Ill be shooting at an outdoor range at about 50 - 100 yards, so I'm unsure if my irons ( and eyesight ) are good enough for this distance.

Any feedback is welcome.

Congratulation for joining the SKS club! Before doing any modifications, go and shoot your SKS in its original configuration, shoot it a lot! Enjoy the design even if for somes peoples find it very outdated, take time to familiarilize with your rifle. For 50 to 100 yards, irons sight are good particulary if you have very good eye sight. For optics, try to have a mount that require drilling and tappin because usually, the mount that replace the rear cover are so so. I think you can order stock directly from skman or you can check the the EE forum for part and you could find a scope and a mount if you feel the need.
For my part, all my sks are in original configuration and i like them that way but if you want to make upgrades, go ahead,just keep in mind that sometime,less stuff is better. With the right part you can do a very fun rifle to use.

The thought process for the bipod was I plan to shoot it quite a few rounds through it..and holding it the entire time may become tiring. The idea behind the stock was I wasnt a fan of the original SKS version, felt heavy and kinda akward ( to me at least ) .. but your right, maybe after a few rounds through it, ill change my mind.

I think im gonna hold off on the scope mount for now.. learn how to shoot it first before going that route.

As was said, shoot it stock for a bit, you will get used to the weight and the feel of it. I'm a big guy, so I have slowly noticed I would appreciate a longer, or adjustable stock. Try Fabsports for your stock perhaps? Check some of the CGN sponsers at the top too.
Try shooting it standing, kneeling, resting on a tree branch etc.. I originally wanted a bipod too, but didnt really need one..

Try irons with a sandbag, rested on a stump etc. Check and see for yourself how good she shoots with irons... you may be surprised. You can adjust them after a few shots and hopefully get pretty bang on 50-100. Its all about holding her steady, coordinating your breathing, and being nice and gentle as you squeeze the trigger. These triggers are a bit stiff so mastering the squeeze is important.

Also, practice the teardown and buildup of the rifle a few times, it will help you get to know her a bit better.

2) There is a few available you need to figure out if you keep original stock or replace with aftermarket one.

3) SKSMAN American company. They can ship but you will have to pay duty and taxes plus brokerage charge. I don't know how he ships, but you can ask people who bought from him.

I bought one too-installed a Choate dragunof stock and a williams firesight set[can't focus on regular open sights]I'd like to know about bipods too-attach to bayonette lug or the stock?

Last year, i bought a TAPCO stock from SKMAN and he ship by mail to me. Was to put on a chinese SKS but i didnt like the stock so i sell it on the EE.
 
Personally, I think the SKS is fine the way they was made, but either way you can't get more bang for your buck in today's market. Me and my shooting buddies have a hundred cases of ammo and we can make noise and smell powder for the next decade. Enjoy while you can, ammo and rifles are becoming less and less available. Its not the most accurate gun in the pile, but it sure is fun and the best price.

Im going to purchase the monte carlo from you at some point today or early tomorrow morning
 
I put mine on a Tapco stock because I found the LOP too short for my liking. I never looked into a bipod but I'd use one by the swivel than on the barrel as you normally don't want anything touching the barrel when firing your rifle.

I have looked into the scoutmount because I thought it was simpler than having to tap and drill the receiver. The SKS is notorious for flinging brass high and wide so a brass deflected installed under the rear sight leaf is recommended before it dings the hell out of your scope. That is also why some like me prefer the scout configuration.
 
IMHO, tweak the rifle until it fits you and your purpose. Like you, I read the threads when I got mine, and modified it for it's intended purpose - fun and hunting. Lots of pics in the Red Rifle forum, so you can see what myself and others have done to theirs to make them suit our needs. If you scope it, for sure look at the tapped in scope mounts, and make your own (like I did) or buy a good quality mount like the Choate. Whatever you do, have lots of fun with it as I and my buddies have.

after market stocks add weight
plus bipod and optics
the thing will be a tank
 
Thanks for the feedback so far guys.

Im going to take my sks " as is " to the range this weekend and put a few hundred rounds through it before making any big upgrades. The only thing I'm changing is the rear sights to a upgraded set of fiberoptic ones that Neit is selling.

Just in case you don't know, the Cz58/858 ones he sells on his website will not fit onto the SKS. They look the same as the SKS rear site but they are different enough that it won't fit.

I had him make one for me couple weeks ago, and I love it. Matched with a Williams SKS Firesight, it turned out well. Although I have to adjust my rear leaf to 200m to hit 100m ... must be the way the firesight sits.

Neitarms has two prototype ones that he made for sale in the EE right now, and are not marked sold yet.
