SKS Questions

The store bought hunting ammo is largely non Corrosive, but there was a large shipment of Chinese surplus a year or so ago that was billed as non corrosive. It wasn't. I didn't buy any and always clean My guns after shooting so I wasn't affected. But listen carefully and you will still hear the sobbing and snivelling of those who ended up with rusty guns because of it.

OK, that I know about. But I just wanted to set the record straight and not scare people away from the store bought commercial stuff... it's all very good and no worry about rust. However, like you, all my guns get a thorough cleaning after shooting, but it nice to have the added peace-of-mind that the ammo is non-corrosive.

the sks have such a big receiver, why dont anybody drill and tap for a kalashnikov style mount?

There is such a drill and tap mount available for the SKS (try SKSman). I've never used it on either SKS I've owned, but I hear its much better than the receiver cover scope mounts for holding zero.

The SKS is NOT the most accurate rifle out there, but it will do to 125-150 yds for deer with iron sights. I won't try for a game animal farther than that with the SKS. It IS a very reliable, reasonably lightweight bush rifle with the same knockdown power as the 30-30 rifle.

buy 2. that's that i did. now i have spare parts if my shooter were to ever have any problems. also, just buy the surplus corrosive ammo and clean your gun after each use. i actually really enjoy the ritual of cleaning it. i get to know my gun better. plus i find it relaxing.

the sks is a lot of fun I would not put it into a plastic stock either though. the wood ones are great :) (they are also pretty ###y imo)
