One of my older friends son just came home with a Russian SKS with tapco stock and 1000rnds for $300.
Any way this gun apparently goes full auto every now and then. Obviously he wants it fixed but im not sure where to start. As the mag was not pinned to 5 by the last owner ( he said it was legal with 10!) im wondering if he also played with the internals as well.

Would a new trigger assembly be the best rout?

Take the bolt out of it and give it a shake the firing pin should rattle. If it sticks forward, then it will strike the primer once the round is chambered.

Whatever it is, get it fixed ASAP, it probably could detonate out of battery.

Also, get that mag pinned, I'm pretty sure he is in possession of a prohib.

definitely the firing pin take out bolt shake no consistent rattle that is the prob
take out pin clean all with solvent and do not oil
retry shake test

I'm aware of 2-3 people in the past that have had occasional 2-3 round bursts from Chinese SKS's. If I recall correctly, there were trigger parts problems.

If it was purchased used and was not pinned, it's previous owner likely had it over a decade and likely doesn't give a crap about keeping up with things like gun law changes and how to clean an SKS after shooting corrosive.

My two cents.

This happens when the firing pin is jammed forward from being left dirty and uncleaned.Like slam firing as pin is stuck unable to retract.

Update. Mag is pinned & gun disassembled for now.

Previous owner is getting reamed big time this weekend apparently. New owner is not impressed with the BS mag info he was given.
