Can't say it'll work for all but I recrowned my SKS's two nights ago with a .30+ cal tool from Pacific without removing the barrel from the stock so nothing was changed except the crown. The crowns were quite rough...typical dime-a-dozen rifles. It went from 3/4" at 25 yards to less than 1/4" at 25 yards - one ragged hole! I can't wait to shoot at a longer distance...

Interesting stuff!
Post a pic of the crown and the crown tool. Did you cut a new bevel crown or a recessed crown? Did you use a mill for this?

Nice ! Mine shoots wonderfully at a distance from factory.

Where did you get the tool? I'm going to be doing the brass screw and lapping compound trick on my tokarev and m305 soon but I'd rather have the tool.

I have done considerable reloading and ammo testing for my SKS's. I shoot off of a steel bench with sandbags. Been developing successful loads for 40 years next. I'm not new to this. They have MagWedge 2nd gen rails that are bolted to the rifle and 4x shotgun scopes. I was using Dominion non-corrosive ammo which has given me groups of ~3" at 100. Actually my best handholds so far are with 110 grain Hornady .32 cal hollow points and I have tried every bullet with a .312 diametre believe me from 110 to 178 grains. I introduced only one change in the rifle...the crown. I've been busy with other reloading so have not gotten to 100 yards...or even 50 so it may not prove out. But for $66 for the tool I figured it was an economical experiment. Not saying it will work for all reds, but I have hopes...

The original crown does appear to be off center.. Nicely done. You got to remember about milsurps they got all sorts of quirks. How much love and patience you got is the answer..

So the single size .30 cal will fit the .310 barrel ? How about .312 for Mosin Nagants and Lee Enfields or would that require different arbors ?

How long was the wait to have the tool delivered? On the Pacific site they say 6 to 8 weeks!

I would love to cut off a couple inches of barrel in order to get rid of the front post and bayonet lug, but obviously that would turn the rifle into a prohibited killing machine.

If the simplified classification system ever takes hold, I’ll do it and re-crown.

So long as it stays 18.5 inches?

So far I've done 4...a Handy-Rifle in 30-06 that had been threaded which I removed and shortened (stayed about the same), a Mosin I bought CHEAP that had the last several inches of its barrel badly pitted and so was removed (haven't shot it yet), and these 2 SKS's which appear to have improved but more shooting will tell

...we'll see...sure worked for one and didn't hurt another

...the Mosin required the most work, the SKS's were easier, and the Handi cut like butter

...look at the Midway video on how to finish the cut...easy

Good it worked for you.
There is various testing that has been done, just google "effect of crown on accuracy" and it is surprising the results obtained in different test. Seems like results contradicts each other.
