Hey guys I had a friend refinish his sks with some colour added to the stock. He informed me that there is a step by step process on here somewhere I just can't find it.
Thanks

I did mine last year, and I thought I had it all out.. you can tell where I missed it cause the new varnish took forever to dry in those spots.. it's not as hard as the rest of the stock finish.

just make sure you really sweat out the cosmo from the wood before you do it.. if you think it's goog enough.. then do it one more time..

This is an absolute must. Stuff the wood stock to the max with paper towel, newspaper, then wrap it in a black plastic garbage bag and place it on the dashboard of an old car or truck for a week.... then change paper and do it again. If you hurry this process, then all for nothing until the cosmo is removed.

I vacuum sealed my stock while soaking in methyl hydrate. That pretty much did it for sucking out th cosmoline but i bet there is still some left

I recently had good success with wrapping the stock in plastic and pouring most of a bottle of mineral spirits in with it. I let it soak for ten minutes, agitating it occasionally, and then repeated the process.

Then I wiped it off, allowed it to dry for a day, and all the grease is gone, with no damage to the original shellac finish.

I tried it before with paint thinner and that did damage the finish (on another gun). Mineral spirits seems to be a different (better) product.

I've had good results with wrapping in a donor white towel or sheet into a black garbage bag and onto the truck dash in the sun. Check it every couple of hours and wipe it then repack. The white will tell you where its coming from.
