sks reliability

Time to write in to Myth Busters if you want the legend put to the test. The AK is the most pervasive firearm in the world because if it's durability, ease of manufacture, and reliable fire under all conditions.... However I always took the "packed with mud" story with a grain of salt.

If someone can prove that the AK can do it, I'm pretty certain an SKS can too. They were both engineered at about the same time with the same objectives (cheap, durable, reliable).

Let Adam and Jamie test the legend. If there is a chance for a Bugs Bunny catastrophic failure... I'm sure they will film and air it.

OK never mind myth busters. Someone was crazy enough to try it. Looks like I don't have to take the story with a grain of salt anymore... It's true.

You call this full of mud? It was barely dipped in water. I have fired mags and mags of blanks with C7s that had suffered way worse than this. From what I have heard c7s are not known to be as reliable as AKs and SKSs, so i would tend to think this video does not prove much...
 
every rifle i have will function properly if gotten " wet " like in that video .

the ak has a front rotating bolthead does it not ?
the sks uses a rear tilting block .

you can pull the action back around 3/8's of a inch , and still have the hammer drop on a sks .
in other words the rear of the block is NOT fully seated and the rifle can be fired .
the easiest way to do this is fill it with mud , cycle the action and have some mud keep the bolt from fully seating .


now if the guy in the video took a sks , straped it to his back ( open part of the action face down ) and rolled aorund in the mud on his back for a few minutes , i'd beleive he would have gotten a bit more than just water in there .

Though I never got to war with my c7, i'd trust my life to it anytime, it is just as temperamental as the guy who uses it. Being a part of a medical unit, I've seen people get them jammed good, usually people that don't even understand the mechanics of their weapons, and I beleive THEY made the bad reputation of this weapon. Sure an AR is more of a professional soldier gun than any peasant's truck gun...I am trained to use it and maintain it well, but even though i got it dirty a couple of times, I have more than one time been surprised to see a muddy and sandy bolt slam home and fire the rounds it was asked to. But then again, take it from someone who never actually went to war...

To really test a gun, I think one have to really bring it everywhere a human can go. That's my definition of a reliable gun. I would like to see this test on video. The mythbuster thing was actually a good idea!!
 
I wil hereby take the word of an alleged profesional soldier for it .
