SKS Replacement Stocks?

What are your experiences and recomendations for a replacement stock for my SKS and why? I find the stock on my SKS is just to short and want something a little longer in the butt area. A composite stock would be lighter. I notice some have the folding feature which I like for storage but I haven't settled on that as a criteria.

Canadian retailers?

I had an ATI folding stock on my SKS years ago. Was wobbly when open, more of a look-cool item than it was functional. I have a Butler Creek montecarlo stock right now, it is nice and light and has the proper length for me.

Don't bother with the ATI folder - its just too cheap. The montecarlo feels really nice and seems to improve accuracy a little.
I've seen some M4 styles here and there, but haven't had an opportunity to check them out yet. I think P&D enterprises have them occasionally.

I'm thinking about getting a tapco stock. They have the adjustable stock so maybe that's an option you'd like.

I have the Tapco, while nice to hold and shoot, you must unscrew the lag bolt holding the pistol grip to remove the trigger mech. I may drill it out and put a threaded rivit in.

I'm using an ATI folder with none of the wobbliness mentioned above. It did however require some filing and clean up sanding to fit the handguard to the stock properly. Folder is nice, fits easily in the quad box.

I've got a folder and also a monte carlo style. The folder is handy and comfortable, but it's wobbly and my groups open up to 5" (off the bench with sandbags) at 100 yards with it. The monte carlo stock is significantly heavy, and not too much fun to pack around compared to the folder, but it has a very good cheek rest and my rifle suddenly groups 2" at 100 yards when I mount it on the same rifle (again, sandbagged at 100 yards, and the POI changes too, so I need to adjust my scope when I change stocks). I've yet to find a perfect stock for the SKS; I love the size/weight/feel of the grip on the folder, but it's innacuracy really makes it just for shooting cans at the gravel pit. The monte carlo is a way better performer, but forget about your SKS being "handy" with it mounted. I was actually thinking of modifying the folder to be fixed sturdily in the extended position and adding a cheek piece and seeing if that made it a good all around stock. Right now it's just gathering dust as I can't abide anything that's just there for looks, but doesn't perform.

One problem I have with some of the after market SKS stocks is they often turn this light handy carbine into a heavy pig...case in point the dragonov style stocks.

BTW IMHO the Tapco stock gas tube scope mount is even more useless then a receiver cover scope mount...as it moves even more, and is made of plastic.

Tapco or Leaper is making a SKS scope mount that uses the spring cover, but also uses 4 set screws to reduce movement. Botht the SKS & AK do lend themselves well to mounting scopes, unless you drill and tap the revier on the side and then you end up with a high mounted scope.

Thanks guys for the replies. Looking at the Monte Carlo design right now although for a Bush rifle the folders have some appeal but as some have posted may not be the best choice as far as shooting is concerned.

rollingrock, to answer your question it is not about trying to improve accuracy, the stock that came with the rifle might fit a small Asian or a Russian with a great deal of winter clothing on but the butt stock is way to short for comfortable shooting for me.

Hey Bob, I've got two synthetics for the SKS brand new I'm not using, we've had good dealings in the past take your pick if you like for 60 shipped, I'd go ramline (top) out of the two but they're both good.

I've got the A.T.I folder stock in modern cammo and the dragonv. The best stock I had was a Buttler Creek montie carlo. The Dragonov is too big and heavy and the folding stock moves? The montie carlo was the nicest. But the folding stock is more conveinient and looks way "cooler"!!

Scope mount wise, I picked up the Scoutscopes.com scout mount from Marstar a while back. It attaches to the rear sight base using a pin and four allen screws, works great, and to boot, the rail is removable, and the rail mount has a notch in it, so you can use it as iron sights as well (adjusting the front sight as required). Put a red dot scope on it and have been having a blast with it.

I've handled several folding stocks, all of them were wibbly wobbly, however there acuracy was quite good by SKS standards.
Mine has a dragonof style stock , after much shaping and modifying I love it.
The monte carlo style feel good but I haven't shot one yet.
If you put in a butt spacer and painted or refinished the original it wouldn't be half bad either.
As for scope mounts they all have there draw backs, the Kalinka IMO is probably the best, seeing it's what the Russians used. I had several rear cover models , one bolted down, they didn't work that great.

Check my post in the EE. I just put up my near new Tapco T6. Having owned a Dragunov and shot the ATI folder extensively, I'd go with the T6. I also put up my new choate drill and tap scope mount which IMO is the best mount out there. ROCK solid and no loss of functionality as you can still remove the dust cover. I'll probably regret selling both of them, but I have the fever for a bolt gun!!!
