I ordered two sks rifles from the recent Wanstalls sale and just got them opened up last night
I had a good laugh when I checked out rifle#1.

The stock looked like it was sanded with a belt sander with 40 grit, no shellac on it at all. Upper hand guard is laminate wood and the main stock isn't
Not one matching number on the thing although the condition of the metal parts is good, didn't see any rust
Cleaning rod was bent at a 30 degree angle, not sure how they got it in there lol

Rifle #2 looks better, all matching minus mag, painted metal, shellac on stock was crudely applied though and looks terrible but I think some tru oil will fix it up plus work on rifle #1s stock

Anybody get any gems from the sale or are they all just rack grade blasters similar to what I got?
Can't really complain what do you get for 209 bucks.
That first rifle cracks me up it was definitely slapped together from whatever bits were at hand it will be interesting to see how it shoots

Last year i purchased my 2nd sks from a site sponsor. They had one on display in store that was in pretty decent shape. Blued, hardwood etc. one spot on the butt stock was sanded to bare wood. Maybe a 2"x2" section. I asked if they could show me 2 more and id take the best one. I wasnt overly concerned with the finish, but the 2 they brought from the back were completely sanded to bare wood and pretty roughly. I took the display model. But in hindsight i should have grabbed a sanded one since i ended up refinishing the stock anyway. A little boiled linseed oil and some elbow grease and she turned out quite nice.

I bought a sanded one on purpose last year because it was an early 1950 with the perforated fake down pin! I did see a few as I was going through the lot of sks, I should have bought another sanded on, it was an izzy, still had beautiful blueing and in great shape except the stock. I believe they came from a particular refur factory. You can tell which factories were good and not so good. I don't mind most of the Parkerized finishes, they are what is on 90% of modern rifles, I think they were experimenting with the sks and parking them! There is one type that looks bad, it's a bit shiny and has a slightly bumpy look, kinda crappy. I have a few Parkerized ( BBQ) sks that look great and are very tough finishes, the flat finish is similar to modern AR, shotties and rifles!
Strip them down, clean and oil them and fire away! The ones with a lot of rust on the working parts and bent items should get taken care of by the sponsor!

I received one with a heavily sanded atock with 3 wood repairs, bbq paint, rusty trigger spring and mag release button and cleaning kit door that doesnt close on its own. I emailed the email quoted yesterday but havent received a reply back yet.

I suppose that you paid near 500$ for two SKS from the bottom of the barrel. For that price you can buy decent rifles on EE.

I had one of these in my cart for a couple days, contemplating buying one. Waited to long and they sold out.
Then I saw people posting in another thread that they were less than pleased with what they were getting.
Did the other thread get locked?

Guess I got lucky.

1954 Tula, blued, wood stock - ding in one part of stock but not a bother, I filled it today.

Matching numbers except mag bottom. Action is not gritty, stripped it completely - no rust. Barrel looks good.

Happy as a clam for 235 to the door. My LGS still sells '53 Russians in good shape for 249.99 plus tax.

Did you have to remove any grease or was the stock actually bare? I ask because as I said before, I have one and would like to shellac it also.

The stock had a light coating of cosmoline when I bought it, minimal cosmoline. I cleaned it well with paper towels and varsol when I cleaned the metal bits and barrel/reciever. I shot it for a good year before I refinished it so it wasn't oily or greasy by then, I likely gave it a good wipe down with isopropyl alcohol or windex before I started re schellacing it. It was only the outside of the stock that was sanded, I didn't have to hit the top edges or barrel channel, it was really easy and schellac drys immediately. After the last coat I let it harder for a week or so and buffed it with 0000 steel wool to take down the shine a bit, more to match the sheen of the handguard which wasn't sanded. Iirc I steel wooled it before I did the last coat to knock down any high spots from dust and whatnot.

I haven't gotten mine yet, but I asked them to delay shipment a bit. I just hope that doesn't mean I'm getting the last of the rejects. I've always been pleased with my purchases from them in the past, I'm just hoping that continues. Fingers crossed.

I got a couple more for my table, different supplier, one is rough sanded , but finished , exc blue , chrome, 1950 I think.
other is exc original 54 matching no sanding, exc blue , no paint on either.
last show sold a painted one , good, wood not bad, had a better one , but he wanted the poorer one as it was a quad gun and you all know what that does to finishes

Ordered the top one from cabellas Boxing Day $200 sale, 1951 bbq refurb, repairs all over the stock, chunks missing out of stock, rust on bolt and charging handle, mismatch mag, $234 shipped

bottom was the wanstalls, $221 shipped, blued 1954, chrome bore and barrel, mis match stock and mag, heavy sanded down stock, no refurb marks on gun but stock suggests otherwise

going to keep one original and play with the wanstalls one, purchased a 5/30 metal promag, and the vented cheese grater handguard (if I can get that pin out!)

sucks some got blued some got crap, hope you get better luck with the sks lottery

Yeah the two rifles were $440.98. It would have been nice if they were better quality but I got them to be backyard blasters and not collector pieces.
As long as they function properly I will be happy with them. The heavily sanded stock is actually looking pretty decent after a couple coats of tru oil
There has been some real nice ones on the EE for not much more money
