SKS Safety

I hunt with a fudd that scares me with his rifle and Ive mentioned it a few times. Loads one in the chamber, puts safety on and then pulls the trigger to make sure it works.... then he slung the rifle onto his shoulder and turned around with the muzzle right in my face. Good times. I dont trust him anymore and stay clear of him when he has a loaded firearm.

I know a guy like that. Went moose hunting with him 1.5 years ago. He pointed his rifle at me multiple times due to gross negligence, ALWAYS has a round in the chamber (if I'm with other people I don't rack a round unless I feel like I might need it soon) and when I tell him to stop pointing his gun at me he blames ME for standing too close, walking too close, etc etc. meanwhile hes got his rifle slung over his shoulder pointing up and backwards on a 45 degree angle with zero regard for which way its pointing. At one point it was pointed straight at my face and he had the gall to argue that it wasn't pointed at me, despite the fact that he couldn't even see his barrel as again, it was on his shoulder pointing behind him...

Now, I only see him at kids' birthday parties because his kid is friends with mine, I do not go hunting with him - I would rather stay home than deal with that kind of irresponsible crap...

But thats pretty off topic. That same guy LOVES to bump fire SKSs though. Never seen him hit anything but it sure wastes ammo quick...

All personal choice. I was not comfortable with a lever action rifle after taking the hunting course and realizing that in order to disarm the hammer I had to hold it with my thumb, pull the trigger and carefully lower the hammer. For this reason I avoided Lever actions for years. Never had an issue with SKS's except one that I found when playing with Dummy rounds and this was only 1 SKS that I found the issue one.... when opening the magazine with the safety off in 1 out of 20 or 1 out of 30 circumstances the firing pin will fall. Were these live rounds they would have discharged one.... it made me careful and I bought a full magazine of Dummy rounds in every calibre I own to be able to test a full magazine and cycle the snot out of every new rifle I get my hands on just to be sure the mechanisms work perfectly. I still own that sneaky SKS and in the last 6 months have been unable to get the rifle to reproduce the issue. It happened maybe 4 times with me messing with the rifle but still it did happen. Basic rule is you don't put your finger near the trigger unless your prepared for something to go boom. Always maintain safe muzzle control and never load the rifle unless you are at the range or off in the woods and prepared for the results.

I'd be finding a new hunting partner.....

Was this guy a former US Vice President?

Well as a few US folks have done, I tested my sks rifles, they had the ammunition, and if they so saw it fit go and shoot, nut they stayed put on my porch and never touched the ammunition, had my neighbor looking but he came over, petted and handled the rifles, wanted to go play with them haha

Hi Everyone,
A couple of years ago, I became a big SKS fan. But then at the range...

I was taking the safety off, while wearing gloves. The glove's finger tip went inside the trigger guard, and BOOM! I accidentally fired a round. No harm done, the muzzle was pointed down-range, as it should be.

The experience made me rethink buying an SKS. I understand it was *MY* mistake. But I don't think I want to own a firearm where it is so easy to make that mistake.

As the story ends, a friend easily convinced me to go for an M14 instead.

Прощай скс! (translation: "Goodbye SKS!").

Cheers,
Neil

Do you realize how many pounds of pressure it usually takes to fire an sks rifle ? you must have big fingers and they were frozen no ? don't blame the rifle it was your fault . I have never seen an sks rifle with a 1lb trigger pull . now your buying an M1A. not an M14 and it will have a lighter trigger pull than the sks . what are you going to do now ? ask your friends opinion again instead of figuring out it was your fault and not the rifles . please for heavens sake ask someone in the know to help you to learn to shoot safely or take up bowling
spaz .

The SKS I was shooting was a loaner at the range from a friend. It was fairly recently bought from Cabela's, so I don't know anything about what condition the sear was in.

But I'll be clear: I agree that it was my fault. I ain't blaming the rifle. I am saying that I don't like the rifle.

As Travis points out, the SKS got rid of me. :)

Definitely personal choice.

I agree about lever actions: I don't like having to drop the hammer to half-####. That said, a level action does balance well in my hand and feels like I can get a good sight picture quickly.

Knowing it was your fault and not the rifle is a good first step. I see no reason to not like the rifle though, you've already admitted it was your poor handling of it, not the rifle itself that's the issue...

Next time pay more attention and this won't happen again. Plenty of rifles (particularly older ones) have you fumbling around the trigger area for safeties, mag releases, etc. So if that's a deal breaker for you you're gonna miss out on some good rifles - the Lee Enfield has the mag release inside the trigger guard for example.

What's the point of this thread, if the sks discharged because of touching the safety but not the trigger I could see an issue but your finger touched the trigger, so non-issue.

Sometimes if you don't put enough wraps on the TP your finger will go through, but then again ice cream has no bones

Most older guns have their nuances and idiosyncrasies.

Don’t dump on the SKS because you screwed up once. Make it a learning point. I guarantee you’ll never do this again. We all make mistakes. In your case, no harm, no foul.

M1 and M14s have their own manual of arms. Google Garand thumb for a common boo boo! Also, the ammo is way more expensive.

Give the SKS another chance. And remember to keep your booger hook off the bang switch and all will be fine!

How many wraps would be a good start in your own opinion ?
