I initially tried a receiver cover scope mount. Several gunnutz told me they were crap and would shoot loose, they were right and it did shoot loose.

Round two. I order a PSP mount from kalinka (great people to deal with) and bought a Kobra reddot from a fellow cgn'er. Drilled and tapped the receiver. It was my first time trying this and it was surprisingly easy. I was worried that I would destroy my gun. I didnt and things worked out well. Got the sight mounted and took it to the range. Check the pics

Observations:
- SKS with a red dot scope is really fun to shoot!
- the first two target pics were bench rested at 60 meters
- the last target pic was rapid fire standing unsupported with reticle that looks like this - _ - kinda like the reticle that the alien used in Arnolds Predator movie
- these pics were taken at silverdale range. An awesome range run by really nice people. Their store, Lanz shooting supplies, is a great place to buy stuff. Its a small owner operator place which is exactly the kind of place I like to deal with. Ill take this over a big company anyday regardless of price.
- seems the 7.62 x 39 easily blew a hole in the targets. Target grade steel targets so I was surprised at the damage to them. Silverdale if your reading this Ill happily pay for those targets. With the red dot zero'ed in I easily hit those targets. 3 shots from standing position at 40 meters, 3 targets hit. Im not a great shot, my point is that the red dot makes it easy to point and shoot.
- for those interested the handgun is a tokarev. Love this gun. Works great, points well and I can actually shoot it better than my Beretta 92fs.

Parting words
Have fun and keep learning. Deal with local folks if you get good service. Ive dealt with bigger places, better prices but horrible service and attitudes (I wont name names), support the small guy (or gal in the case of Lanz Shooting Supplies) and always, ALWAYS be safe!

Great pics!

I'll have to remember not to blow the Metal Ram apart at our range when I get my SKSs. :D

Yah that looks like a way better SKS mount, also glad to hear about the tokarev...I've been thinking about those.:)

Looks like you had a fun day. :)

I Wish we had a Gunstore like yours in my area.

Nice pics farmerbob. Looks similar to a SVD mount, do they sell a lower one ?

Did you have to cut the wood when you fixed the rail ?

PS, I used to own a poppy farm.

baghdad, I had to cut the wood on my stock. I cut a bit too much so when the mount is off its not very pretty. If i had to do it all over again Id cut less off. I believe they do sell a lower one. Just search for kalinka optical and youll find their site.

Great report, great pics! Time to start counting the days till I can get my PAL!

So - are both the TT and the SKS Chineese?

Hell, maybe Ill see you there in a year with my SKS and TT ;)

Cheers!
Alex

What distance was the metal targets set up at when you punched holes through them?

Also was it the Green box Czech ammo?

What range is this at? Sure looks nice, but I'd want some heavy steel gongs out there as it is a long walk. :)

nice report farmerbob, curious to know just how high that mount raises that red dot.do you find yourself wanting a cheek piece?

It raises it up pretty high, I think Id only want a cheek piece if the stock was longer. The short stock makes it uncomfortable to shoot after a few hours as it cramps my arms a bit. Im keeping this one stock so Im not adding an after market stock

The metal targets were at 40 meters and it was the czech green box ammo. The range is silverdale in the niagara area, they do have a gong at 100 meters but I dont want to shoot it incase I put holes in it.

thanks for the feedback. Both the TT and SKS are chinese. For the money the quality of the TT is very good imho (so is the SKS). I let a friend try the SKS and he bought one the next day. He got a parkarized version with all the usual SKS factory markings on it. Those particular ones are the regular army issue from what I can gather. One I have is void of any factory markings other than the serial numbers. They both function flawlessly.
