So I went to take my trigger assembly apart today, and after I got it all apart I was looking at the sear. And noticed it does not look like the unmodified sears i've seen with the negative slope, it has the notch and positive slope that i've seen on the sks's with trigger jobs. Now i got this as a refurb from wholesale sports, and it was all full of cosmoline. So how'd this happen?

There is a easy way to tell if the hammer has positive or negative sear engagement. Remove the trigger group and see if the hammer moves back when the trigger is pulled= positive or if the hammer moves forward= negative. The last two triggers I did started out neutral from the store. It is pretty hard to tell by just looking at the sear.

First things first.
Ensure the firearm is empty and then depress the trigger. Then with the trigger depressed rack the action. Did you hear the hammer drop? If not slowly release the trigger. Did you hear a click? If it fails any of these 2 test I would check out what it could be that causes these issues and it could be as simple as the positive sear enguagement that you are reffering too. SKSMAN dot COM as he has new sears if you wish to replace it.
In order to see if it is the sear that needs replacing remove the trigger assembely and tap it with a hammer every were to see if the hammer will drop due to unsafe sear enguagement. I would do a youtube search for the Sailor Moon vid's to get a better understanding on how to correct trigger issues. If it passes all of these test's I would say it's good to go.
What I generaly like to do to improve the trigger pull on this rifle platform is to polish all the areas in wear the sear contacts other moving parts. Such as the trigger guard rails, the bottom of the hammer and also the 2 guide channels located on the sear it's self. I start off with 400 grit paper then 600 grit and finnaly a dremil with kiltz to get a mirored finish. Then I do the double spring trigger & sear mod to cut the trigger length of pull in half almost. Plus with a slight negitive enguagement ensures me a almost 5lbs trigger job on this rifle.
Hope this helps ya out ;)

Some of them actually do come with positive engagement straight from the factory. Repair manual defines sear angle as 102.30' +- 5', I guess they just always went to the "-" side of that 5', not to the "+" one. Must be easier to file out or something.
