Hopefully someone here can shed some light on this for me. I just bought a 1954 Tula Russian SKS, non refurb from a member here, It looks like a great gun and I love it. Its all he said it was to a Tee.
I have a question about the serial #, its only two letters followed by two digits. Is there any sort of pattern to their serial number system? It just seems odd to have such a low number for a gun that has been in production for years.

I have three SKS's at the moment, one has the serial # begin with two letters, followed by four numbers, the other is the same but has a K after the last number, this makes it a K series. Then my last one is the odd one with only two letters and two numbers, its not a factory code, as its all numbers matching in all the usual places, just like my other guns.

Not necessarily an early year . They used two letters went from (lowest I have seen is 9) -(highest I have seen is 8400ish) than changes a letter and did it again. Look at the cool part though for that letter series you own one of the first ninty nine. I have seen no info on the letters they started with and no one will really know.

I'm beginning to think that the serial numbers are related to how much vodka the guy stamping the numbers drank. I think in the case of my gun with only a two digit serial # he was too drunk to stamp in a couple more numbers.:D
