SKS - Should have gotten one ages ago. EVERYONE MUST BUY!!

SKS is the most shootable rifle in my mind aside my .22 strictly based on the bulk ammo being so affordable, you can go out for the day and bring a few guns and really put a bunch down the tube. no issue, just have fun and not feel like you're putting a dent in your wallet.

Welcome to the SKS Club!

6'2" here and yeah we're not the size of the average Russian or Chinese conscript. When I shoot a stock SKS I have a tendancy to whack myself in the nose with the back of my thumb. They make a plastic recoil pad that replaces the steel buttplate and adds an inch. Way better and no permanent modification to the gun.

I might do that, but my SKS isn't friendly to modification at all. I can't get the bayonet off and I can't get the firing pin out to clean it, the screw for the bayonet won't budge even to the point of stripping and the retaining pin won't move a mm, even when I clamped it in my vice and hit the pin with an 8lb hammer and punch it refused to move, I actually scratched the bolt on the sides where I had clamped it in so tight that the pad I had to prevent such wear and tear tore.

I've since given up on trying to make her change.

That sucks about the firing pin. My retaining pin came out with some light taps. Maybe if you used a bit of heat? Not HOT HOT but maybe a little couldn't hurt. I don't know. I would not like it if I could not get the fire pin out. Someone here must know a trick about that.

Maybe, it couldn't hurt I suppose, I just don't want to damage the bolt. I'll need a new punch though, the last one bent, which is always a sure sign something's amiss.

Sorry fellas, I'm a little biased here. Recently I attended a long range shoot. And just for sh@ts and giggles, brought my M1 along for the young'uns used to playing COD and wishing to shoot the "pinger" rifle as they called it. Lots of fun at 720 meters and it was very popular indeed. Later on an SKS was brought out to the line, and dispite our best attempts at spotting for him, the owner/shooter could not strike any target at 720 meters, 550 meters or otherwise. No-one asked to shoot it either. I ran out of 30-06 ammo rather quickly though. ;)

Those ranges are long for an m1, extreme for an sks. I consider the sks a 100-200 metre rifle, you need a whole different animal for the 550 and 720 metre range.

You need more than 1 SKS.....

I have 5 of them and I'll buy another 5 ;)

Oh yes, I have only just started to be an SKS addict. I can see this is going to be a long and prolific addiction.

550-700 meters! That's a long way.

Yeah dig the SKS too. Pulled off the cleaning rod, buttstock cleaning kit and bayo yesterday. Handles a lot better now. Not sure how its going to affect the way it shoots though.

Yep, one 30-06 rifle can do that. Myself I'm very stingy and I very much prefer the long distance feeling I get with every single pull of the trigger.

To each his own.

Oh I enjoy target shooting. I have a nice .308 with a decent scope for that. I am still no good with it but I am working on it. Also got into loading my own ammo for accuracy and fun.

But I enjoy stump hunting with the sks and the m305 as well. :)

500 metres is an awful long way to shoot with an SKS. I'd bet there are very very few if any of them capable of making repeatable shots at that distance but they aren't exactly designed for it. The Russians had a realization of sorts after Stalingrad, long range battalion fire was an out of date idea and urban warfare was to be the new norm so they started building rifles that could go through hell instead of ones that could hit a grapefruit at 300 yards. I did some shooting at 400 with one of mine (SKS) and the groups could be measured in feet, not inches.

*A more fair comparison would be between the SVT and the M1. Both were designed during the same period, came into service within a year of each other and both were used as sniper/sharpshooter rifles. Oh yeah, the cartrídges are nearly ballistic twins as well.

Me too. I have a Savage 12 and a Rem700 that I hand-load for in search of accuracy, but when I'm done shooting those and have my targets filed and annotated, I put away the crony and out comes an SKS and the surplus ammo. It takes me a better part of an afternoon to go through 100 rnds of hand-loads, and about 10 min to go through 100 rnds of surplus 7.62x39. I just ordered a 2/3 size IPSC target in AR500 to replace the mangled steel junk that my SKS's have destroyed. I hope it survives...

I have to admit that I did try reloading for the SKS and a single shot Baikal, I just couldn't stop myself.

700m???

It is an Appalachian Assault Rifle.
If you can't see the little brown jug, then you aren't expected to hit it.

I bought a 54 Russian SKS with a Modern Stock off a friend a few months back, Love it! Going to buy a Chinese one next and keep it in its original condition just to have one of each :)
