Hi Folks,

I picked up a '52 Russian yesterday and after getting most of the slime off the stock noticed it has a lot of surface scratches in the wood.

What's the best way to fill in/buff out these kind of scratches. Most are not very deep, but quite noticeable.

Thanks

I guess I don't understand the word "bubba". I thought I knew what it meant, but maybe I was wrong. I just want to make a nice stock look like I take care of it.

Thnaks for your suggestion though.

The sks is a nice gun the way it is those scratches and dents tell a story But its your gum and their are some nicely refinished ones out there.

My guess it was dragged through some gravel. That being said, I would drag it the other way through gravel to have the scratches going in both directions. :)

Personally I see SKS's as fun shooting rifles you use until you need to buy a new one, and keep the old for spare parts.. however if you want to fix it, you'll most likely end up refinishing the stock.

Use a chemical stripper to remove the old finish, then use either a wet towel + iron (as previously mentioned) or be real careful with a heat gun to raise the wood fibres up. Then let it dry and sand down the grain in the original grain direction to a smooth flat surface. I recommend 220 grit, 400 grit, then 600 wet grit paper (used dry).. but i'm OCD when it comes to sanding. Refinish with whatever floats your boat, I usually use just tung oil in thin coats every 24h for 5-7 coats.

Or just shoot the gun, whatever is easiest. :)

I understand about the marks being part of the history, but these ones don't offer any character to the gun. They pretty much look like you dropped it in a gravel parking lot or rubbed it against a stucco house. It has lots of character marks, which I will happily leave, but these ones look recent.

Thanks for the help folks
