SKS Tactical Stocks: Archangel vs Choate vs ATI gen2 vs Tapco

Comparison of Commercially available Tactical stocks for SKS:
1. Archangel collapsible
2. Choate folding
3. ATI folding/ collapsible
4. Tapco collapsible (not present on the video-my friend was late)

5. Sabertooth mentioned only superficially

Conclusion:
1. If you go with non-folding: TAPCO is the way to go from most points of view: Tapco is basically "plug & play": no need for extreme filing/ glueing etc such as ATI folding stock
2. If you choose to go with folding, then, ATI Gen2 is the way to go, if you are not scared of modifications/ improvements
 
I've got a few SKS with aftermarket stocks.

They are modded to be short range 'sniper" rifles for new shooters. Low recoil but more than accurate enough to hit a 6" Gong at 100M

The Archangel stocks look the coolest, especially if you want a bit of an AK look and use the Tapco magazines. They also work best for this sort of configuration, with bipods and a raila nd scope attached. They are heavier so very comfortable to shoot.

In the front of the pic is the grey Kick Eze stock. Really reduces felt recoil if that is a consideration, even though the x39 cartridge is a very light recoiling round.

For those of us that are regular shooters, and use the SKS for informal fun shooting, ,but want a cool aftermarket stock, I would usually suggest the Kick Eze or the Tapco stock.. Archangel looks best but is a but heavy and cumbersome IMHO.

My favorite SKS (not pictured) is still the on with the factory stock with a 2" butt extension, High Tech sights, a Quick Pin and the Hi Cal magazine adapter. Great carbine to grab out of the truck, slap in a 10 round xcr pistol mag, have really good sights instead of the crappy stock sights, and a thick buttpad to make shooting more comfy. Not hard to hit the 100m 6" gong offhand with this one. :)

those r my SKSes, the one with Archangel 's gone :( --> exchanged it today for a non-sniper 1941 SVT40.. a fair trade I suppose.

Accent is mine: I am Russian Canadian as ppl say (Canadian of.... such and such origin). Initially I tried to lose my accent.. now, I just let it be:)

The first one, is the one I'd grab: --> nice handgrip-monolite with the rest of the stock, very nice cheek riser. Still needs some work on bayonet hook though-need to cut the barrel or cut the hook. Is this stock readily available in CANADA?

Still, as a Russian guy... regular open sights as a back-up is a MUST... so many people relying on scopes in a real life situation.. whether hunting or worse scenarios were screwed by a dropped gun-broken scope or scope off.... and... no sights...all you can do with such a rifle is 20m shooting then.. that's it and even then you are almost blind as scope is on your way

In other words, no open back-up sights = not tactical, dangerous/ useless weapon for the "dog close quarters fight".. OK for the range, but not for SHTF

First one is the Kick Eze. Spring loaded stock so it absorbs recoil- not that there is much in an SKS anyway, but newbies like it.

Like I said, my favorite SKS is one that isn't pictured. Standard stock but with upgraded High Tech iron sights and a butt stock extension. The biggest drawback to the SKS accuracy has ALWAYS been the issue sights. Same as why so many people think 30-30 lever actions aren't accurate- the rear sights attached to the barrel limit accuracy, whereas put on some good aperture sights and things change dramatically.

People would also think the garand was inaccurate if it didn't have such good sights.:)

I agree-the best SKS-is the one in original stock and in good shape.
The #1 reason of SKS inaccuracy is people then sights

Ive been trying to find a ATI ultralight folder for years, I'm just settling with the stock SKS for now.

Waiting for the magwedge rear peep sight to come in, and the hammerhead brake.
 
On my Archangel, I cut off that stupid AK hump, completely improving how it field strips.
It gave me room to mount a Tech Sight 200 rear peep sight, completely improving how it aims.
Since I have no desire to get up close and personal with bears and boars, I don't care about the lack of a bayonet slot.
Inside the forestock, there's a molded drill guide to install a sling swivel stud. Now I can put my Harris bipod there, completely improving my prone shooting support.
When I bought it from Dave at HiCal, I asked for the mag adapter cavity to be milled out. With the HiCal mag adapter installed, it's completely improved my mass of metal downrange.

Raveneye is elegant. Better than TIG welding on a washer.
My only problem is that it is such a long eye relief away.
When I qual'd on the No4 Mk1 and the FNC1A1, I could never forget just what a close up peep does for you.
There seems to be some difficulty getting the Tech Sight 200 up here these days.
If Magwedge could come up with a competitive equivalent, I'd be all over it like a chicken on a june bug.
