SKS takedown problem

Folks,

I decided to take apart my SKS and clean it up as it seems to be dripping in oil from the store that sold it to me. I followed the steps oulined in the sticky http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/carbine/index.asp and immediately got stuck here:

"Rotate the take-down lever on the receiver cover counter-clockwise and then pull it out (as shown in figure 4)."

The lever rotates but the receiver cover won't come off :confused:

I stopped short of prying it off.

Any help is most welcome. Thank you.

You have to rotate the lever, and pull the lever out of the receiver...then the cover comes off...

It's basically a pin that goes through the receiver, and through the lug of the cover.

Try that.

See that lug bottom left? You're trying to get the takedown lever/pin out of it. Pull my man pull!
 
helpful hints . when the lever is point up , apply forward pressure on the top cover and wiggle the lever out (to the right).
 
Thanks Curtton. That helped. Here's another stumper I faced:

11) Using a punch or other semi pointed object (cartridge or screwdriver will also work), depress the trigger release button behind trigger assembly (as shown in figure 11).

The button behind the trigger guard seems immobile. Almost apprears to be a nut. I tried both pointed, flat and squared ends to depress the buttom but no go. Anyone know how to proceed?

The release button can be very hard to depress at times in order to release the trigger group.With the rifle craddled in an upside down possition ,place a punch (or similar tool) in the recess/hole and hit it firmly with a hammer.This will usually do it.Just make sure the reciever area is protected and on a firm surface.

was the safety lever on safe ? if the lever is not pointing forward then you cannot open the trigger release latch.
 
Yep you gotta push hard on that trigger group release button!

Don't forget to clean the cosmoline out from around the firing pin.
Post or PM if you don't know what this means. If your SKS has too
much grease/cosmoline around the firing pin, it may stick and go full
auto on you.
 
Thanks. Fortunately my SKS wasn't packed in cosmo, just oil. The oil can was but I managed to wipe it clean. Funny how it had 2 spouts. Must be a reason behind it since it had only 1 chamber.

I finally got the firiing pin out of the carrier bolt too. I went back to the stickies just to be sure it was safe to punch the retaining pin out. I immersed the carrier bolt in Circa 1850 paint stripper and managed to remove all the paint off it.

Now comes the fun part. Any idea how and what to use to buff the carrier? Rubbing compound? Fine emery cloth? It still has some black marks on it so I may need some elbow grease. The thing is that I only have a drill and a dremel tool so hopefully I won't have to use a bench grinder as I have read others use.
