SKS Tapco mag issue

Hi all, I recently purchased a Chinese SKS. I have removed the original mag to install the Tapco 20/5 plastic mag, as per instructions. The mag fits ok, however, the bolt-hold-open device will not release with the mag in place, so the bolt will not go forward. This occurs with ammo in the mag, and also when I push the follower down on an empty mag.
I am wondering what mod I need to do - do I need to cut down the top end of the spine on the back of the mag? Or do I need to file down the bottom of the bolt catch in the rifle?
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
Thanks for any advice.

I have two of the Tapco mags and from what i can tell, it is supposed to hold the bolt open when the mag is in and empty. If it is holding it open when you still have rounds just look at the back of the chamber where the hold open tab is and try to see what is holding the tab up. There shouldn't be anything that holds it up when the mag is loaded

How new are you to the SKS? Did you fire the rifle with the original mag? I'm sitting here with my chicom sks in my lap and a tapco 5/20 mag trying to re create your issue.

Simple question but, on a loaded mag, are you pulling bolt back to disengage the BHO? Try this: With an empty mag inserted, push down on the mag follower with your finger and ease the bolt back at the same time. The BHO should disengage, letting the bolt travel forwards. Shouldn't need to do any mods to the magazine or the rifle.
Seems simple but sometimes the simple stuff gets overlooked. Hope this helps.
