SKS Tapco mag vs Fixed questions

I have a few SKS's and one is for my Son (14 yrs)

I bought it cheap and already bubb'd

It has bayonet and lug removed
Muzzle break added

I have a bunch of Tapco magazines already, will it save much weight if i swap out existing mag for Tapco?

I wouldn't get rid of original mag. Its just to make it lighter for him
 
The ounces saved possibly on a mag wont make a difference. Pick what one is easier for him to use. (I know the mags can be tricky to take in an out if new to firearms) So maybe keep the original mag in and stick to feeding rounds from the top for him.

You 14 year old boy will be fine with either option.
 
You could let him use it with the original fixed mag......then put the Tapco Mag on.

It would teach him all about stripper clips,..and also teach him modern mag changes.

Kind of a learning experience.....best of both worlds.

he has put about 20rd through so far and really likes it.

Im just trying to do everything possible to set him up for success :)

if its just a few ounces then i may not bother
 
With how the SKS bolt is designed, needing for the bolt to be locked back for the tapco mag to be removed, it really doesn't offer a lot of advantage(5 rounds anyway) over the original mag. It's clumsy and confusing. I'd stick with the original mag, and train your kid on detachable mags with a different platform.
 
Even with the extra ounces, the original mag has the following benefits:

-More rugged, being made of hardened steel
-Easily loaded from the top -> No need for extra mags
-Shorter profile -> Could easily rack the action with support hand AND easier to shoot prone
-Easier to eject rounds and clear malfunction, as it can open even when the action is closed

Pick your battle, OP :)
 
The Tapco mags make the gun cumbersome and can affect reliability.

If your gun has a laminate stock, try to source a more light hardwood version of the stock.
 
With the current five round mag limit ; there is really no since in converting to tapco mags as the duck bill mags are not really all that quick to change when you have to do a mag change after every five shots .
 
Sks run the best with original mag in my experience. With the bayo removed, weight should be significantly reduced already.
 
I personally find I have a better grip on an SKS with aftermarket magazines. I tend to use the magazine as a sort of forgrip.

However, I agree with Canadiankeeper, whatever your son likes best is the best thing to do
