Like the title says, I recently got my first SKS and opted to mod it (I'll get another original and leave it stock one of these days), I have already installed the Tapco Intrafuse stock and today I got all excited when my Tapco 2/20 mags showed up. I installed the tapco extended mag release when I installed the new stock as well. The problem is that the mags will not go in and lock in place without a LOT of force, I mean a TON of force. On top of that, the bolt lock will not slide out of the way once I do manage to jam the mag in.

I have done some research and see this may be a somewhat common problem, and people talk about filing or dremeling the mags, but I didnt find any pictures or really good descriptions of the mods needed. I dont really want to scrap these 2 brand new mags, so I'm here looking for help ;)

Thanks.

Silly question but your bolt is open right? The bolt has to be open to insert and remove the mags

I have had some problems with my Tapco mags in wooden stocks, I had to modify them a bit. But I just did a intrafuse mod and the mag fits great... try seeing where its jamming and maybe try to file there

Come to think of it I did have to file a mag a bit to fit my 1951, seems the receiver was a bit more narrow than on my 1954. File down the side edges along the mag at the top and keep trying until it fits.

This is what you need to do!!! I had exact same problem. Mine just needed filing on the front corners. One on left has been modified

Now a whole new question with these mags, I didnt take it out to shoot it yet, but when releasing the bolt, the bullet in the first pic is on the left and top of the mag, it will feed when the bolt is released. When I try to cycle the bolt when the bullet on the right side is the top bullet in the mag, it doesnt feed, it dead heads into the breach face.....

bumpity bump for the second issue ;)

That's partially why I am going to get myself some factory mags. Grid a nub off, one little tack weld and you have a factory looking detachable mag that works.

Finally got some time to play with these mags and add the last of my mods to this rifle. I sanded both mags on both lips until it cycled (by hand) all 5 rounds in both mags. I made 5 dud bullets to ensure no accidents in the house and other than the entire bullet getting ejected making one of the dogs wonder what the hell was going on, it all went very well!

I also had to mod the stock a little bit to get the mag wedge quick rail to fully line up at the pinned hole, and found that the trigger group wouldnt come out with the pistol grip installed (if it does, mine wasnt coming out)

x 2 on filing the FRONT of the mags where they seat in the reciever. 2 moinutes of work will solve both the fit and feeding issue. The mags will function flawlessly if filed, just don't insert with the bolt closed as the lips will be damaged - plastic after all

Finally took the newly modded gun to the range and put 125 rounds down the pipe. All in all, only had 2 times that the bolt cycled and didnt load a round mid way through the mag. Pulled the mag out and put it back in and it cycled just fine.

After the range visit of course I had to break it all the way down and pour the break cleaner to it and oil it for re-assembly. I did however remove the hand grip and modify it so it wont have to come off in the future when removing the trigger group.

I can say this, now that I have a scope on it and can see the target at 75 meters, and its all set up in the new configuration, it just may be one of my new fave rifles for play time!!!
