Of course the SKS makes a great truck gun that you are not afraid to beat up, because they don't cost as much.
and because they are tough and reliable

There a lot of reviews out there on different SKS boards from people that know what they are talking about by occupation and reputation, would disagree with you.
I think people should try the different products before generalized coments are made.
Ah-ha... and your credentials are???
Confusing choate with ati?The SKS is a great gun in original configuration, but don't trailer park it with a Choate dragon-puke piece of plastic junk. Also, you can't remove the dust cover to clean the gun without completely removing the stock. Very poor design.
I had a choate aftermarket 'conventional' stock I bought for the SKS, iirc, it did not have the cross bolt, do any of the other 'aftermarket' sks stocks have the cross bolt?
No credentials, but lots of trial and error experience.

By the time you get and SKS, a tapco stock, and a decent scope mounting system - you could have bought a VZ58-type gun and had what you wanted from the start. Just food for thought.
I have shown these numbers before:
Russian SKS refurb...200.00
T6 tapco stock........125.00
Choate Mount...........40.00
Middle of the road scope...75.00
Scope mounting if you can't do it yourself....60.00
Taxes......60.00
Total $560.00
...............................................................
CZ858 or VZ58.....700.00
Taxes...................84.00
No Scope no nothing

he is just having fun. We prefer russian other people prefer chinese. Don't mind him.![]()
Jump in and get both feet wet. The SKS is a fun rifle, you will not regret it. Out your way you can pick up Chinese or Russian SKS for between $160.00 and $200.00 no need to pay more. If you are going to restock the rifle, try the different stocks find the one that fits you. The composite stocks do make the rifle feel and shoot better. If you have any questions do not hesitate to PM me.

Fire up the search feature on this forum and search "858 Gremlin" and see what you come up with. Interesting that this rifle has an official name for it's issues no?
Try the same or any variations you can think of for the SKS.
Read as many posts as you feel like and go from there.
Personally, the only problem I've ever had with an SKS was a sticky firing pin. Clean thoroughly, and leave it dry when you reassemble it. Like most of the guys here I've returned the rifles I modded to their stock forms.
And I have two more Chinese on order![]()
I agree. That was going to be my next point too. $500-$600 compared to $150-$250 is a no brainer. If you want a target gun, give up on the milsurp ammo. SKSs are fun to play around with and using a non collectable example is cheap, and easy to accessorize... and still some cheap ammo around. I am using a receiver cover scope mount that is iffy at best because I haven't had the heart to D&T my clunker lever 18.5" Norc, but its coming (evil laugter). I say if you're going to shoot the cheap ammo in a cheap gun go for the alterations that suit you and your shooting. Just don't bubba a real SKS. I keep my "good ones" shaded from the sun!. If you are going to mod one, I would stop at a drill and tap optic - try to use a less collectible SKS if you D&T.
Plus shipping on the accessories,
The SKS irons sights are crap compared to the VZ sights.
You forgot the 4 AK style mags every SKS owner is dreaming about, so in all fairness a SKS-D with 4 mags is still around $600.
