SKS Thoughts?

There a lot of reviews out there on different SKS boards from people that know what they are talking about by occupation and reputation, would disagree with you.
I think people should try the different products before generalized coments are made.

Ah-ha... and your credentials are???

Oh, and by the way, if you MUST change the stock, the Chinese fibreglass stocks are probably the most durable and the Tapco is probably the best design out there. The Dragunov one is just crap. Seriously. It's not well made. It's not well designed. You have to take the stock totally off to clean the gun - does that not sound like a PROBLEM??? It does to me.

By the time you get and SKS, a tapco stock, and a decent scope mounting system - you could have bought a VZ58-type gun and had what you wanted from the start. Just food for thought.

I love SKS-s - have half a dozen of them - but I keep them stock and they work best that way in my experience.

The SKS is a great gun in original configuration, but don't trailer park it with a Choate dragon-puke piece of plastic junk. Also, you can't remove the dust cover to clean the gun without completely removing the stock. Very poor design.
Confusing choate with ati?

I had a choate aftermarket 'conventional' stock I bought for the SKS, iirc, it did not have the cross bolt, do any of the other 'aftermarket' sks stocks have the cross bolt?

I have not run across any aftermarket SKS stocks that have a crossbolt in them.
I have a Ramline Monte Carlo stock that I use to experiment on. I made up a crossbolt and reinforced the stock, I did not notice any real difference in accuracy at 100 and 200 meters.

Fire up the search feature on this forum and search "858 Gremlin" and see what you come up with. Interesting that this rifle has an official name for it's issues no?

Try the same or any variations you can think of for the SKS.

Read as many posts as you feel like and go from there.

Personally, the only problem I've ever had with an SKS was a sticky firing pin. Clean thoroughly, and leave it dry when you reassemble it. Like most of the guys here I've returned the rifles I modded to their stock forms.

And I have two more Chinese on order :)

Plus shipping on the accessories,

The SKS irons sights are crap compared to the VZ sights.

You forgot the 4 AK style mags every SKS owner is dreaming about, so in all fairness a SKS-D with 4 mags is still around $600.

.

Jump in and get both feet wet. The SKS is a fun rifle, you will not regret it. Out your way you can pick up Chinese or Russian SKS for between $160.00 and $200.00 no need to pay more. If you are going to restock the rifle, try the different stocks find the one that fits you. The composite stocks do make the rifle feel and shoot better. If you have any questions do not hesitate to PM me.

i agree
i have a tapco'd out sks and a original stock both russian and say what you want about tapco stocks it really helps with the lenth of pull issue
i also have a cz 858 i like them all and they all use the same cheap ammo!!!!

Except that you can routinely get used VZ58S's or 858's in plain jane config for under $600 on the EE and pay no tax ;)

My point exactly. The SKS is a fantabulous rifle. I own 6 of them at present. But they are best left STOCK. If you are going to mod one, I would stop at a drill and tap optic - try to use a less collectible SKS if you D&T.

Yawn. I'll come back to this thread in a year or two. Dollars to doughnuts "bjs" either has no SKS's any longer, or has them all back to stock configuration and is singing the praises of the design if left unmolested ;)

Been there, done that. Bought the T-shirt.

15 years shooting SKS rifles. I've owned at least 25 different examples, perhaps more. None ever stayed "modded" for long.

I agree. That was going to be my next point too. $500-$600 compared to $150-$250 is a no brainer. If you want a target gun, give up on the milsurp ammo. SKSs are fun to play around with and using a non collectable example is cheap, and easy to accessorize... and still some cheap ammo around. I am using a receiver cover scope mount that is iffy at best because I haven't had the heart to D&T my clunker lever 18.5" Norc, but its coming (evil laugter). I say if you're going to shoot the cheap ammo in a cheap gun go for the alterations that suit you and your shooting. Just don't bubba a real SKS. I keep my "good ones" shaded from the sun!

Yah right. I agree about the sights but that's it. Get a D that uses REAL AK mags. Good luck trotting around the world using a VZ
