Always liked the look of the AK74 style muzzle brake, so I picked up a thread adapter for my SKS, and threw it on there...

First time I went shooting with it, and virtually the first shot - It blasted off and down the range...

Reattached it - Considerably tighter this time, and with the same results.

It will NOT stay on...
Also kind of embarrassing, to say the least -

Nothing like calling for the range to be inactive to dig around in the dirt for your muzzle brake while everyone else checks their groupings...

Anyway...

Any ideas how I would go about attaching it successfully, without having to drill or weld into the barrel?
(Its an old soviet rifle, and I hate destroying history, even if its not worth much)

Its a pretty badass looking brake, so I'd hate to "give up" on it -
I also hate the cheesy look of the 'wrap around your sight post' brakes...

We reccomend installing the brake, then installing the adapter on the barrel, indexed properly. Tighten the screws, then remove & drill small craters where the screws contact. Tighten the 4 screws into the set holes & locktite, you will then have a semi permanent threaded barrel!

Wow !! Your a lucky guy. I had exactly the same set up, threaded adaptor, muzzle brake . Got her on there good and tight, couldnt twist it with a pipe wrench. First visit to ranges with this setup, first round sent the bloody thing flying down range :(
I say your lucky because you found yours again, Ive been back at least six times and four of us havent found it yet, but its not one of the prettiest ranges...atv's, puddles, swamp. My buddy actually said we shouild use a metal detector LMFAO...can you picture the mountain of casings eh LOL
Keep er tight..........and Ill keep looking

SHOOT.......SHOOT.....SHOOT.........

One quick point ........How far did yours go ?Worth knowing because we never actually saw it land anywhere, well we werent expecting it to turn into a grenade launcher eh LOL.
Got mine from Hi Cal and the next one I get from them is gonna be spot welded, superglued and duct taped.

It is important that when using any threaded adapters or threaded brakes or flash suppressors or threaded accessories that no air gap exist between the barrel end and the adapter or threaded brake or flash suppressor. Having a gap as shown above will create an expansion chamber and will develop excessive pressure that could expel the adapter or threaded accessory.

hical is on the money, but unlike a brake or adapter that threads onto the barrel, I would like to point out, tho rather obvious you should actually see if this is lining up correctly, not exactly a great design with the 4 set screws! if the bore is off center or poor machining tolerances, any thousandths of an inch that contacts the bullet is going to cause problems.

I heard from the grape vine that a manufactor that deals with hical was thinking about making something that will be a 100% reliable and will work for any SkS and will use the 858 muzzle brakes. Although they were unsure that SkS owners would be interested in such a product.
