He meant a brass/case deflector to save the scope from getting dinged when the spent cartridges get ejected.

Now, now, S, be nice. Have a difficult enough time just focusing on that tiny SKS front sight. Just can't compete enough with all the young guy's eyes, that are decades newer than my old pair. Have now resorted to attempting mechanical advantages "to even the field".!!!! Am looking forward to the next gong shoot!!!!!
