SKS to AK mag mod

A Friend of mine tried it using the instructions that are available on the net, like many people he had nothing but problems with feeding rounds from the magazine into the chamber.
I have often thought when looking at My SKS D that someone could come up with a method of doing a conversion to AK magazine with a regular SKS. However you would need to modify several things

-milling material off the bottom of the bolt
-widening the mag well to allow an AK-47 magazine to fit
-welding some sort of magazine catch for the AK magazine to the trigger group.

I’m sure more things would be needed as well. However I suppose a machinist who has time and a bunch of junked SKS’s could probably figure out a reliable method. Wouldn’t be a bad idea with all the SKS’s coming into the country through Marstar.
I am sure more people will chime in here but for the cost and possible headache involved you might be better to spend the 500-600 dollars and get an SKS D. I bought mine off a fellow CGN member and have nothing but good things to say about it.

Armed that isn't the point, I love my CZ at the range cause the mags are pre loaded for snap firing, mag change practice etc. I have a few other reeasons too but I am just looking for info on who has done this and what obstacles there are. I fab stuff for 4x4's, stock cars, etc so I am not new to fabrication. I just want to see if there are issues long term like the removal of material from the areas of the bolt and ahead of the trigger group does not compromise the firearm`s function, reliability, or safety.

Stripper clips are preloaded, and you can practice loading with them :p

Going a little off topic, have you fabricated anything interesting? Pictures?

Well I am building a PPSH clone right now including drum mag, I am doing the cz858 to draganov swap. That is it for guns right now.

Now 4x4 stuff I dunno where to start, I am a mechanic at a Ford dealer here in town and I build the factory lifted truck right now from the 8 inch F-350 to the new 3-4 inch lifted rangers runing 33 inch tires. My last build was a toyota 4x4 truck with a vortec 4.3, turbo 350 chev trans, advance adapter for the toyota t case, 6 inch lift and 36 inch TSL swampers. I swapped a 2nd gen box on the truck it was a 1983. My present daily driver is a 1986 SR5 4 runner with lift, 33 inch tires, bushwacker cut out flares, and I have a solid axle to swap into the front when I have time.

i thought about doing it... but im happy i went with a 30rnd steel fixed mag... 7.62 on strippers takes up less room and less weight then a stack of mags and reload times are allmost as fast... it would be nice to have mag's "o" plentry on person but dont forget the cost of AK mag's aint cheap!

I have access to a full CNC shop and have built guns from scratch. I still wouldn't do it. It will likely never work properly and potentially ruin the gun. It isn't worth the trouble.

Well when you put it that way, I think I will pass on it then. Hmmmm might have to look into the hi cap steel mag option. Thanks armed!!

Hotwheels where did you get yours??

I feel sorry for people who the government has made sooo scared, personally my life and the saftey of my family far outweights some stupid 5 rd law espeacially when i carry 50 rds in my 10-22,6 in my 870 8+1 in my .45 and 8 30-06 in a m1.homegunsmith forums has prints for the mag conversion that works just fine just dont cheap out on flimsy mags.remember your saftey and the saftey of yours ALWAYS is more important than ANY law!!!

I aggree with stripper clips and practice you can load pretty quick especially if you train yourself to take cover between reloads. hope this isnt to military/self defence for your question, your other option may be a couple of the quick detach 5 rounders, are you only allowed 5 rds or 10 in the sks?

Why not mod the SKS to accept a 10 round AIA "Lee enfield" 7.62x39 magazine. They are very similar to AK-47 mags.

That way you can have it detach and hold 10 rounds.
