Hi All --

Debating between an unissued milsurp Chinese SKS and a arsenal refurbished Russian SKS. I know that I can't take the Chinese one to the US. All other paperwork aside, is it legal to import a Russian SKS into the US? This would make a difference to me, as I am a US citizen living in Canada. Also, any other input as to which rifle is the better choice? Not interested in collector value, jsut for shooting.

Thanks,

Grey

I don't believe an unissued Chinese has anything over the Russian refurb.

I went with the Russian because every thing else in the house is from China.:)

Quality wise you are good to go with either Russian or Chinese military. The commercial Chinese SKS were made for the civilian market, they are nothing more than Chinese consumer goods. Quality was low and they give Chinese SKS' a bad name in general. The military SKS however is a different animal. Factory 26 was set up with the tooling from the Soviet Tula state arsenal with the help of Russian engineers when the Chinese bought the SKS design from the Russians in 1956. Hence the name Type 56 Carbine. They are high quality rifles designed for military service and well on par with Russian SKS'. Factory 306 turned out nice rifles fit and finish wise, Ive seen some good and some bad Factory 316, Factory 625 seems to be one of the worst for aesthetics. All are seriously reliable and rather accurate rifles (for an SKS that is) Every Chinese Military SKS Ive owned or handled was rock solid. The big low point for them however is the factory wood. It is Catalpa dipped in an orange hued varnish. Russian arctic birch of any flavour with the red shellac is nicer, no doubt about it. After stripping, degreasing and refinishing, the Catalpa has a beautiful grain. Can you guys still buy SKS in the States or have prices sky rocketed? It may be worthwhile to grab one to play with up here then sell it before you head home, and buy one down there?

I think the OP was asking more about the US embargo on comunits items.

I dont know if a russian sks is allowed in but a google search or phone call to the atf or border services would answer it fir you.
