I was reading where someone stated they are reliable under -70 degree weather. Has anyone put an sks in cold, hot, dust, mud, humid, driven over, thrown/dropped from height etc. test. I would be curious to see the result of a deliberately abused sks.
If I scrape together some coin, maybe I will do it and log it. but until then, anyone???

All of these tests and more were done at Tula in the mid to late 40's, prior to commencing production. Field testing was done in wartime conditions, late 1944 to May 1945, using the first limited test production models. The results and user feedback led to the first full production model SKS-45 in 1949.

Don't forget that in 1941, Sergei Simonov designed the PTRS anti tank rifle in 14.5mm. The action of the SKS is but a scaled down version of that sucessful design.

I am always astounded when various "gun magazines" also conduct these type of torture tests for their readers. No military weapon system would enter service without such extensive testing during the development stage.

Please don't waste your time and money destroying a perfectly functional firearm.

There was an episode of Mythbusters on Discovery Channel where host tries to set off 3-4 SKSes on the back seat of the car with boomboxes om full blast.Of course they failed.I guess that was a LA version of torture test .

I was watching something about Stalingrad and they showed how the Russians were able to keep their firearms functioning by mixing something with their gun oil.
They put them in a big freezer to test it.
All did the same with the uniforms they were wearing.

Pretty neat.

I watched that episode and it was diesel fuel mixed with gun oil, the action was stiff but still cycled.

And don't destroy a perfectly good firearm, there has been enough idiots on the internet doing that already.

yeah, saw a smoldering sks

that was cool but then I saw a you tube clip with a smoldering ar15 and an AK on fire (still shooting). OK, I guess they have had all the testing I would or could think of. Will leave good enough alone.:D

There is a great video on history of SKS but it is in Russian. First SKS was made in 1930th I think it was 1932. It is not the same as you see right now. After it was tested and modify then it was put in production and was used in 1944 and 1945 in a second world war. When feedback was send to the main general they decided to put in mass production. In 1947 Kalashnikov came out with AK47 and in 1955 I believe it became as weapon of choose for red army and SKS production was stopped all the equipment was shipped to China. This is why early production of Chinese SKS was of good quality. Then Chinese government start producing it all over China with new equipment that they made. When they cut corners this is when it start showing that the quality went down.

kristian55 has a link to it but like I said it is in Russian

The real question is will you be reliable in -70 degree weather? :p
