This is the first SKS (1954 Izzy with matching #s) that I have owned. So I field stripped to clean it. It was actually fairly clean of cosmo. Now I am having issues reinstalling the trigger group. It does not want to snap in place at the rear catch. The mag and the trigger group seems to be lined up correctly. Does the safety have to be in the safe position to latch the trigger group down? I tried both on and off safe with no success. I thought that maybe the latch might have gunk behind it as it does not seem to move al all and seems very stiff. I hate to start banging on the trigger group with a mallet or use a clamp to try to get it to latch. Some you tube videos show that it should latch fairly easily. Also I tried to reassemble without the stock attached. Same issue so I know that it is not an issue with the stock clearance. Has anybody else had similar problems and how did you solve it? Any help would be appreciated before I get out the BFH.

There are lots of YouTube videos, take a look, however the trigger group needs a good smack to get in place tip the receiver up side down on a block of wood or similar and make sure it is not resting on the sights or other, and with the latch hole up against the latch give the trigger group a good smack, use a piece of wood with a mallet to hit it, it should snap right into place. Just hit the flat part behind the trigger guard/ latch hole.

Which is right for disassembly, but reassembly needs directed yet soft energy.
If what you're about to do can break something, chances are it will.

Hmm, if memory serves, I have used a cartridge for both as I have had stiff latches that needed to be depressed while applying a palm strike. Got tired of scratching the latch with a screw driver lol.

last time I cleaned mine, I recall was hard to snap it back in, but with body weight force went back in, as others said you can help it a bit with a toll/cartridge, screwdriver/ to push that pin a bit inside before you press down.
