hi
this is probably a stupid question, but i purchased an sks, from trade ex (great condition, already cosmo free :) )
I stripped it down yesterday and double checked everything according to the sks cleaning sticky thread
put it all back together
both before and after i took it apart, when you slide the charging handle back, it locks open when mag is empty, so you can load rounds
when the mag is open at the bottom, you can rack it and gently let it slide forward

in both these cases, the trigger never lets the firing pin do anything?

i havent loaded it with rounds until i take it to the family farm for some target practice later today or next weekend, just wondering if thats the normal behaviour?
im used to bolt actions where you can still pull the trigger and gently slide the bolt back in so its shut while not being cocked

does the sks (and most semi autos) only allow the action to do anything after its picked a round up from the mag?

i just wanted to make sure its operating normally before i take it out to play :)

Thanks!

Pull the bolt back until it locks open for reload. Pull the bolt back and hold on to it while you put your finger on the little latch that holds the bolt open just below where the stripper clip goes in front of the bolt. Push the latch down while holding on to the bolt, so it doesn't fly shut on your finger, and slowly let the bolt close. Pull the trigger and it should operate.

you're talking about de-cocking the hammer with the bolt fully forward? the hammer won't drop unless the bolt is in battery (fully forward) as this is the only time the disconnector will allow the sear to trip the hammer, it doesn't need a round, it can be empty, and will dry-fire...i picked up some snap caps for mine.

alternatively, if you don't want to dry fire it you can remove the trigger group, hold the hammer while pressing the disconnector on something and pull the trigger...don't hurt yourself, then reinstall the trigger group :)

Check if the safety is on, and also check if the bolt action is forward all the way. That's what mine did, if you let the bolt go forward to slow it won't engage. Try it and let us know! Have fun with your sks, its the most fun firearm I've bought.
