I recently purchased a Type 56 that accepts AK mags. It came with one short 5 round mag. The mag looks identical to the mags I am using with my SKS-D. It functions well during shooting. Here's the problem. The mags that I am using in my SKS-D will not lock into the Type 56. It appears if the lips on the mag for the Type 56 are about 5 mm shorter than the rest of my mags and this is preventing my other mags from locking in place. This mag does however function in my SKS-D with no problems. My question is has anyone else had this problem? Do I have to modify my current mags to fit or are there slightly different mags available for this rifle.

The mag on the left is my SKS-D mag and the one on the right with the shorter mag lips is the one that came with the Type 56

im confused , when you say type 56 , do you mean type 56 carbine SKS or type 56 rifle AK .

bcos type 56 carbine SKS that accepts AK mag is the same as SKS-D .

got a pic of the rifles?

Was that the SKS from Powwersurge? I offered to buy it the day he posted but never heard back and I don't see anything saying it's sold yet.

Ok I finally got around to taking some pics of the rifle. I might be mistaken about this being a Type 56 but it is not an SKS-D as I have one and this rifle is quite different. Shorter barrel, longer gas piston tube, and a very different mag release. I just wish I could figure out why it won't take any of the mags I have for my SKS-D but the mag that came with it works flawlessly in my SKS-D. The only thing that I can see is that the mags I have with the longer lips won't fit into the grooves in the rifle as the grooves where the mag lips seat into in the rifle are to short. The only fix I can see is to either cut all of the lips on the mags I have (not really something I want to do) or have the grooves in the rifle machined so that the are about 5mm longer so the mags will sit flush.....

yes, you do have a SKS-M and its suppose to take your "D" AK mag without any problem.

having said that, these rifle are individually modified from a type 56 so there will be some non-uniformity .

i would not touch your "D" mags bcos there isnt anything wrong with them.

i would dremel the groves in the "M" .

interesting rifle , i like to get one .

Yup that's a commercial variant M.
Pretty neat.

When shopping for mags I'd bring the one that fits it along for comparison.

I actually found this one from a guy in central BC who was advertising on the Firearms Canada website. It was still packed in grease and looks like it has seen very little use. I picked it up for under $300.00. Funny thing was the guy just advertised it as a Norinco SKS with detachable mag. I asked the guy if it was an SKS-D and his answer was "I don't know what that is. I have had this rifle for 7 years and never fired it and don't know a lot about it." I have to say I am quite pleased with it.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I think I am going to dremel out the mag grooves (very carefully) to accept the mags I have.
