It is one of the last of the original SKS 45. After the first year some changes were gradually made. The spike bayo was changed to the shiny blade bayo. The gas block went from 90 degree to 45 degree. The receiver cover release handle tab is hollow that changed to a filled in one. The firing pin in yours is the original spring loaded firing pin with the small retaining pin. The bolt carrier and bolt received some changes after this too. The rear sight block also had a change but that didn't happen for a couple more years. I would assume yours is the early one as all the other 49/early 50 parts are there. Pics would be needed to confirm. The bayo has already been changed. Would need to see the front stock ferrule to see if it is the original or was changed to accept the blade bayo. The fact that it wears a later stock I would think it might have. More details can be found in this thread: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...SKS45-ID-FAQ-Collectibles-update-feb-8th-2011

You can see the differences and the progression of changes.

These early guns are rare and there is a good chance no more will be brought into the country. Please do not bubba this one if you were considering doing it. Cheers

Yeah that is the later stock ferrule. They did this as it didn't require modifying the later refurb stocks that were used. The 49 type stock for end was slender and matched the smaller front ferrule. So it was easier to put a new ferrule on and then the stock didn't have to be modded to fit the ferrule, and spike was replaced with blade bayo as the stock would have to be modified to accept the spike bayo. Yes the cover was an early one as the release lever it has would only fit the rounded hole. Your SKS shows some of the early original 45SKS details but some changed as well. The hand guard is solid hardwood and the stock laminate. However I don't think it was the original hardwood as it is the lighter color. I suspect yours may have been refurbed more than once. Not unusual on the 49/50 guns...

cool thank you for the information on this matter.
I don't plan on doing any mods to it but I do want to buy a cheap sks to turn it into a muzzle loader of some sort either a 36 or 50 but that's a long time from now
