I'm debating which one of these rifles to ad to my collection. Anyone have experience on both and recommendations? Just comparing the two. I already own an SKS and love it but have been curious about the SVT 40. Thanks

The SVT is bigger and a little more complex. It has a bit more oomph as well and is probably one of the loudest guns I've ever fired. For plain old high volume banging away, get the SKS. Get the SVT if you're into the history or want another unique gun for the collection.

If you already own an SKS......................what debate?

SVT's are neat, but they do nothing for me. No desire to own one personally. They are REALLY loud, and I see them jam quite frequently. They were decommissioned for a reason too...

I love my SKS it goes bang every trigger pull and its quick to load and easy to use. My SVT 40 not so much, it doesn't go bang everytime (depends on the ammo your using), its a bit more difficult to load (I use stripper clips and the 7.62x54r ones are not nearly as good as the 7.62x39 ones), and its more difficult to use (gas settings, more difficult teardown etc.). But if you don't have a SVT 40 and you do have a SKS I would go for the SVT.
Another idea is if your looking for a high quality semi-auto in the same price range and production range as the SVT 40 (maybe a 100 or 200 above depending) I would suggest looking at a AG-42b. There maybe no surplus around for it anymore but it is a cool semi-auto which is reliable and easy to maintain once you get the hang of how it works.

I have both SKS and SVT 40 rifles. For the price, get it while you can. Better to buy one while they are cheap than to want one down the road and have missed the bus IMO.

grab a couple more of each!!! :) I have 6 SKS and 1 SVT, but I am working on a couple more as I speak!! Too many damn guns and not enough money. Add in building a Garand and the Credit card IS NOT GOING TO LIKE ME :) My SVT fires everytime I pull the trigger and have had ZERO issues with it. Keep it clean, adjust your gas setting and shoot it. You will love it!! It is one of my favorite guns to shoot!!! Have fun!!!

What he said. For me I started with SKS then got the SVT too. Now I enjoy both but have preference for the SVT.

I got both and love both! As hungry said don't buy one, buy 2! My svt as ben flawless and accurate, what a blast to shoot ( pun intended) I don't find it that lound do. I find my braked rfb louder and a braked 10" ar15 is ALOT louder!

might as well have an sks and an svt-40, they are both fun to shoot. I bought some 200 gr soft points for my svt and will take it out bear hunting in the spring

I have both as well. I prefer the SVT40. Detachable magazine and it feels like a more sophisticated firearm than the SKS. My SKS is like a club though, very solid and it has it's pluses. Overall I have one non refurb Russian SKS and 6 SVT40. I consider the SVT40 ahead of it's time in many ways. In terms of firearms history it's also a lot more significant than the SKS which I view as a stopgap until the AK47.
