SKS v.s. SVT

I have both. Earlier comments about the SVT being finicky are true in my case... I suggest you find a good deal on a 91/30. Westrifle has beauties right now. They are wickedly accurate and a ton of fun.

If you're a history buff with money to spare you could always pickup one of the M38s they have. Handy carbine and a little rare...

If you're going to change caliber to 7.62x54r in your Russian collection, it opens new doors for SVT40, Mosin, and M44/38. Why not have them all instead of the same thing several times?
 
I have all the russians (sniper and carbine variants to) and i love em all. Just bought three svts and stoked to shoot one this week. Never have i regretted buying one.. Only regret not buying more
 
I've got 2 svt40s and they are finicky. If you load them right, and have the gas settings spot on, they will serve you well. If you are going to buy one though, buy for historical value alone.

If you want a shooter get another sks. They are so much easier to clean and strip. The svt has torn holes in my shirt and gave me a couple blue thumbs. Hate those Damn springs.
 
i own the 2 , and my svt work well with the Russian ammo , with this ammo is run at the lowest gaz setting , and accuracy is not too bad , like i says to a friend the SVt is a men rifle , it dont kick too much for the cartridge it shoot sure it not a sks but it have a big difference between the cartridge ,
 
Both are great rifles. I have a '40 Tula SVT and '53 Tula SKS. The SKS is the cheaper and simpler to clean option and has a million after-market options. SVT will usually be the longest and loudest rifle on the range (unless someone is shooting an old-school black powder rifle). Ammo still reasonably cheap and available for both.

You won't really regret buying either, but you should buy one of each so you can make your own comparison!
 
For a shooter, SKS hands down. At these prices though, I'd really think hard about getting at least one Russian of each type, ideally two - a collector and a shooter.
 
I've got a Mosin nagant, SVT 40, and SKS.

SKS is definitely the better option in terms of practicality, easy to clean, cheap ammo, cheap gun, aftermarket parts, loads of trouble shooting info available.

The SVT 40 is a nice bit of rifle if you ask me, especially with the lever arms sale making it nearly price competitive with an SKS. But the rifle itself feels like a solid platform, and the detachable mag is a definite bonus.
I imagine there would be a lot more after market parts if they weren't 1200ish dollars down in the states.
Also as far as nice features goes the SVT 40 beats out the SKS in my opinion, no such thing as a slam fire in a SVT really, as they have that internal spring, then you also can take out your cleaning rod with a button rather than screwing it, minor though that may be I think that's cool.
The SVT just feels more mechanically thought out, whereas the SKS seems like it was manufactured for just bare bones reliability and mass manufacture, which isn't bad mind you.

And yea, SVT+Mosin= fun fun fun all with the same cartridge.

In the end though you'll probably have more fun with another SKS to tacticool all to crap, I'm thinking of buying a Chinese one for that express purpose.
 
buy both. I have an early 90's import chinease sks that is junk. I have a 54 russian sks that is a very nice piece of kit. I have now 3 svt-40's and they are great. Shoots straight, fun, loud, pisses off the tree huggers. The 7.62x 54 r round is a man stopper It also goes through pretty much anything. As far as hunting goes you can get sp ammo for them both, so taking game is not an issue. I also have an m44 carbine and a 91/30 mosin so I do like the round. Buy these now cause prices will go up.
 
The SVT isn't that hard to strip honestly, just get a proper tool kit and your golden.

If you can't strip an SVT in my opinion you will hate lots of other semi auto's as well.

It really is pretty easy, the hardest part by far is just getting the front barrel shroud band off.

That's not saying much.
 
The SVT40 is a far nicer rifle to shoot. Great for long distance, very managable recoil and share ammo with your Mosin ! I have both, both nice to shoot, SVT40 is my choice.
