I, like so many, have an sks buried deep in the safe. A nice Russian one i picked up a few years ago that's in great shape. I recently picked up a bunch of guns of a friend who's dad passed and there was a Norinko SKS in the lot. I didn't think much of it and was planning on selling it since i already have a nice red Russian one. Today, i noticed it came with a couple mags and it finally clicked that these are AK mags, not standard SKS mags. I was just wondering what the general consensus is on SKSs that take these mags, vs the clips.

Follow up question, was there a run of SKSs made to take these mags or is this a conversion kit?

Could be a sks-d which is a Chinese SKS built to accept AK magazines. Otherwise is may be a kit, post pictures we can tell you.

Sounds like OP has a Chinese SKS D or one of the in Canada converted ones by kodiak. I had an SKS D and I found that the mags were difficult to seat and because of the pin could not be seated with a full mag. Your hand holding the grip got really sore quickly as well.

He said it's a Norinco, that would most probably make it a genuine D ( Detachable magazine ) model.

The AK mags are indeed a pain to seat and they don't have bolt hold open on the last shot. I prefer stripper clips.

I overlooked the norinco part. that is embarrassing

I prefer stripped clips as well for the SKS

I have a norinco sks-d and it has a spike bayonet
That one has the blade type, did norinco make sks with a blade bayonet?
Don’t recall seeing one before

Cool variant of the SKS. My only experience with detachable mags is on a friend’s tapco stock. Between that and my own stock stripper clip model I prefer the clips. I suspect the AK mags would be smoother than the tapco ones
