SKS vs AK SkS?

People can take them or leave them. It's more of a plinker than it is anything else. Most people are used to the standard sks's using stripper clips or at most using tapco duckbill mags. I personally just want an actual SKS-D as my dad bought one back in the day when they came to market. He traded it in when purchasing his Winchester Model 70 thinking he would just repurchase the D at a later date. Unfortunately the sks-d well dried up before then and I am now missing a collector firearm as a family inheritance.

A little late, but here are a few photos. Thanks to your info and some googling I think you're correct, a SKS-D. Let me know if I'm wrong.

that is a gorgeous specimen of a "true" D model SKS. I say "true" D because it was manufactured as a detacheable mag version , complete with an AK47 type magazine release.
The other D model, posted by the fella with the forward mounted red dot, is a DM model and not the "desireable" AK47 mag release type. Instead they (norinco or the importer) modified fixed magazine rifles to accept a detacheable magazine. However, these rifles with the sliding mag release (same as fixed mag) will accept the true D model ak47 mags but most often the 30 round and drum mags fall out of the rifle due to thier weight.
For me, I have no use for stripper clips or problematic magazine release assemblies.
The SKS-D is superior to all others in my own opinion. I could care less about a lack of a bolt hold open.... the gun goes bang till it goes click and you change the mag.... or count to five as you pull the trigger.... seems pretty simple to me.

If I owned an SKS-D as pristine as the one pictured..... I would not part with it for any amount of dollars but as a resale value if you don't want to keep it.... mags are worth 50 or 60 bucks each and that rifle..... bare minimum 1200 with one mag.
don't let anyone here sucker you out of it ;)

Are you sure about that ? To the best of my knowledge they are all made with a mix of parts.

i used to collect Ds, sold them off and no interest in collecting them again but $1200 is off the chart.

I've owned all types of factory built chinese sks

1.Regular Chinese sks loaded with stripper clip

2.Sks-md or MC i forget..(like the first photo in this thread that the guy incorrectly calls a D) regular mag release and 10 round detachable ak mag but won't take the weight of a loaded 30 under recoil.

3. sks-d uses larger mag release and no stripper clip guide in bolt.
I also agree with everything 45acpking refers to value wise.

I wouldnt take a sks with an ak mag adapter at any price. Every one I've personally touched has been unreliable.

How is it better ? The reason I ask is that I have had both and they both seemed to do exactly the same job.

i guess these days with the 5 round mag limits, maybe the mags don't fall out when fired.
However, back before the 30 rounders and drums got neutered to 5 rounds we shot both the sliding release models and the D models side by side with the mags at designed full capacity. The mags always dropped out of the sliding release models while firing.
Back when alan lever (rip) ran lever arms, chinese SKS rifles of every kind were availlable for dirt cheap and ammo was stacked all over the store. Some friends and I bought a pallet of them along with half a skid of ammo to go with..... chinese silver box x39.
When the day comes that the rivets have to come out...... I'd rather have the Ak style mag release model

but each to his own. Any SKS is better than no SKS

I suspect badly fitted ( or not fitted ) mags was the cause of the problem. That said even with mags that work I will take a clip fed SKS every time.

Thanks guys... I think the only logical thing to do here is to take it to the range and give it a go! I'll report back once i get out, might not be for a bit still.
