SKS vs CZ 858..

I don't know what makes it 5x-6x more expensive, but I do know that the 858 points and handles like a dream. The SKS is more like holding a 2x4 to me. The 858 is more accurate in my opinion. Could just be that it fits me better too. All in all, after handling both, and also a Ruger Mini 30, I decided that the right one for me was the 858. I don't regret the purchase. I may pick up a Russian SKS in the future, as a beater, to keep at the cottage.
IMO both are good buys.
I have owned a number of SKS' both real (Russian) and Norinco and they are solid, dependable and reliable rifles but they are only so-so for accuracy being pretty much short-range battle rifles designed to work time after time after time in the hands of untrained peasant troops and irregulars. I am currently down to one Russian SKS that I keep as a momento of the former USSR.
The CZ 858, which looks like an AK 47 but actually has nothing really in common with it, was built outside of the norm Warsaw Pact way of doing things and showed some independence on the part of the Czechoslovakia government. It is a more accurate rifle than the SKS, is easier handling, equally reliable (notwithstanding comments about the infamous "Gremlin") and has those very cool piss of a lie-ber-all magazines. I recon it may be the best value on the market today (with the Norc AR15) and in my view is a superior buy to the Norc M14 ( which I have also so I'm not being prejudiced here just calling it like I see it ) and requires no mods being good to go out of the box.
Personally I would buy a CZ858 and an SKS ( Russian one ) and a couple of cases of ammo and alternate them on range days.

Its simple. The SKS are military surplus and there are millions of them on the market. The 858 is new production, there are not millions of them on the market, and it cost many times more to build them. The 858 has modern day machining that is many times more accurate than the machining processes that were used 60 and 70 years ago. Most of the SKS are rebuilds with the exception of consumer made Chinese rifles, and have warn parts and barrels. Some of the SKSs are actually quite accurate, but most of them were built with a mandate that it should at minimum, shoot a man sized target up to 300 meters.
I have both, I favor shooting my 53 Tula SKS over the 858. Each to their own...

If you want a cheap beater that lobs 7.62x39, get an SKS.
If you want a half decent gun you can really hit stuff with, get a 858.
Just my 2 cents. I think my 858 with FAB furniture is way more stable and accurate than a factory sks. It's also lighter without the heafty wood stock.

The russian sks are surplus and can not be imported into the US so they are sold for whatever they can fetch. In the states they run between 500$ and 1000$. To those american they are worth it.

CZ is safer as it doesn't produce slam-fires.
Ah, yeah whatever. I own 4 sks rifles and have never had a slam-fire. Maintain your gun, and they malfunction less, ar-15, sks, whatever.
I've taken apart the bolts on both and both appear supcebtible to the same issue; namely lack of cleaning.

The first time when I was takin off the piston tube thingy from my SKS, I did not know if it was braking or it was coming apart.
I have to agree with this. I own a half dozen SKS and my shooting buddies own another dozen or more combined. We've never experienced a slam-fire, although we are aware of what it is and its cause.
Of course if you want to have accuracy in 7.62x39 and you've matured past the Rambo/AK47 fantasies, why spend $700 for an 858 when you can spend $900 for the CZ 527 bolt action and shoot holes through a dime at 100 yards.
