Looking for a little advice. Honestly, mostly want one of these two guns because the ammo is dirt cheap and you can dress them up pretty cool too. The CZ is roughly twice the price as the SKS, why? Is it worth the extra $$$? Is one more accurate, more durable, easier to clean and use?
As far as red dot scopes, any suggestions for me??

It all depedends on what you want. If you want to spend over $600 the 858 is more accurate and there some pritty cool things out there that it can be kitted out with. If the $150-350 is more of your price point get the sks. I have a russian one that i paid about $250 for that shoots farily accurate but sks's can be hit and miss on accuracy. If you just want something to shoot cheap ammo out of and don't care about getting 1" groups at 100M get the sks and save your self the money because with the low quality of the surplus ammo you will not get very good groups with the 858 anyway. But with the 858 crappy groups will likley be the crappy ammo and not the rifle as where with the sks it could be both.

I have both well, I had both just sold my simonov sks for another cz well actually a vz58. Frickin guns are beautiful, accurate, reliable, dependable. I have 0 problems with my cz858, Probably shot 2 full 1120 round crates through it with only a couple mishaps-due to shizzy ammo. Get the CZ , you will NOT be dissapointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not accurate you say tikka#1, I can shoot 300yards at a steel gong and hear that bi&ch chime almost ever time with iron sights. NO LIE!!! Come to oshawa skeet and gun club with me and you will see and hear.

SKS $170 Case of Ammo $180 Total $350

Accuracy is subjective. When you buy any rifle, you do not know what you will get for groups until you fire it. The best you can do is carefully inspect your choice before you plunk down your cash, and take your chances.

The good thing about this is that there are a lot of like new SKS rifles on the market today, so you have many to chose from. I just bought two at a Gun Shop in Brandon, for $170 each. Refurbished, yes, but both looked unfired.
Russian, Tula manufacture, one with a laminated stock.

Both are in the under 2 inch group mark at 100 yards, with surplus ammo.

Many years ago, on a Silhouette Range, my hunting partner and I tried a SKS that had been around the block a few times, on the 500 yard Rams. After a couple of sight corrections, it was possible to get a fairly high percentage of hits on the Rams, and most of them fell when hit.

To me, the SKS is a "fun gun", and us old geezers have to have our toys. You can not expect Varmint rifle accuracy out of an SKS. That is not what it was designed for. It is a military rifle, and the 300 meter battle sight setting should give a clue as to what the purpose of the SKS is as to the expected range in which it will be used. If it will stay within a 12 inch group at 300 meters, it will have done it's job.

The Russians recognized the limitations of the Cartridge, and developed the Dragunov for longer range shooting. Putting a scope and an aftermarket Dragunov type stock on an SKS does not make it a Dragunov, although to some people, it may look "cool". Since we are all different and have different tastes, to each his own.

For me, I'll buy the SKS, and use the difference for ammo to have fun with.

Im not saying that all sks's are not accurate. Mine will shoot a 2-3" group at 100m. But a friend of mine had a norinco sks that you were luckey if you could get it to group under 5" at 100m and don't say it was the shooter because I just said that mine will group at 2-3 inches. As far as it goes I have seen a few 858's consisentley grouping at around a 1 1/2".

If you're planning on doing any offhand shooting (IE not on a bench or bags) then get the CZ/VZ. Handles well. The trigger is good and the rifle balances nicely. Ergonomics for the controls aren't perfect and your optics mounting solutions suck, but that's the same with both rifles. With the CZ I prefer the pistol grip and the ability to use mags on a system designed for it over the sks.
It's a good all around gun.

That being said the SKS is a decent rifle, especially for the price.

The CZ-858 has everything you wished you had on an SKS. Detachable mags (4 mags), pistol grip and depending on model a folding stock. And it weights barely anything and balances quite nicely, the barrel is already threaded for muzzle breaks and quality aftermarket parts are readily available from various dealers on CGN.

Some say the accuracy is on par or better then the SKS but some don't know how to shoot, so YMMV.

Are you thinking of doing some sort of competitive shooting? If so choosing the SKS is not going to help you win any trophies. Although it has been done before, YMMV.

I have VZ 58 and shot authentic russian SKS which was in good condition.

Honestly, they are about equally accurate. The catch is that CZ still makes VZ 58 and to find excellent Tula's SKS is very hard. If you do find one, it cost pretty much the same as CZ.

For me, deciding factor was that I can buy and replace a barrel on my CZ if I need to, with an SKS you are pretty much stuck.

CZ is much lighter, shorter and handier.

As for other aspects, such is toughness and reliability, SKS seems to be better. I am not saying CZ is not reliable, all I am saying is that SKS can take much more abuse. I mean I know a lot of hunters who are using SKS for hunting and no one seems to be using CZ 58. No sure why, but this is what I see.

All in all it is a personal preference. CZ is a little bit cooler because some military forces are still using it :). Would be hard to imagine Elite Special Forces unit with an SKS :D.

All I have to say is if you buy SKS don't buy black bolt one. It is a mark of heavy refurbishment and misuse of rifle. Get a silver bolt one you will be much happier.

I finally got to put my hands on an 858.
Sure is a tiny gun compared to the SKS.
Safety is hard to work for a lefty......
So is the clip drop latch.....
Seating a clip for a lefty is a little awkward.....
Neat gun and looks to be very well built....
Going back to buy one today!!:dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

I am not trying to be a jerk or anything but it should be a magazine not a clip.

Sorry I stand corrected.....tho I could care less!!
