SKS woes?

I want to add that 40-somethings like myself actually like purpose designed tactical style rifles, but not on a 65 year old military carbine. Bought the T6 stock, liked the look and feel for a few weeks, then realized it was ghay and gave it back to the dealer for free. That's $140 I will never get back. Better to use the cash on quality ammo or towards a crate of surplus fodder.

Jesus H. Why does everyone get their panties in a bunch every time someone dares to think about getting a Crapco stock for the SKS. Listen, man, here's the deal:

If you want an inexpensive rifle that is suitable for medium game hunting or just shredding paper, get an SKS. Ammo is cheap, the round is powerful, and it is accurate enough for general purpose gun fun. For your money, there isn't a better deal around.

You want rails? Get a Tapco T6. It's your rifle, no one can stop you. I have one. It's way more comfortable than the original wood with its pistol grip and adjustable stock. Furthermore, it has a rail or two that you can play with (though for optics they aren't useful - look into BC Tactical for more on that). Depending on how hard you look, you can buy a T6/SKS combo for 300 bucks. That's half the price of a CZ, and unlike an AR, you can actually take her out without a hassle because it's non-restricted.

Bottom line: the SKS is a great rifle with a lot of potential for purists and bubbas alike. Ain't no one's business but your own what you do with it once you slap down the cash, so do what makes you happy and ignore the ball-busting jeers of the more narrow-minded herd that tell you it's a crime to do what you want with your own gun. Spend a little - have a lot of fun, that's what the SKS is good for.

I have a Tapco Intrafuse with the bottom rail and the gas tube cover rail.
So much better than the original wood stock.
To hell with the purists, if you want a badass Soviet rifle get an SVT-40.

I put a Tapco on mine I think its great. Some people will give ya flack for it but there is nothing wrong with improving on a poor design.

I dident have to clean the cosmoline of my SKS I convinced the dealer where I bought it to sell me his display model.

Yo dont wast ur paper on dis wackass wood guns from like 60 years ago. Dis rifle got no acuracy Save yo money for sumpin tite like da AR

ar = restricted. sks = non-restricted. ar = 1000-2000 bucks. sks = 200 bucks.
ar ammo = .50 cent/round(rough guess as i don't own any) sks ammo = .20 cents/round. if i want MOA accuracy i will buy a sniper rifle. mainly i just like the fact i can take my sks in the bush use it to hunt if need be. bush shooting can be alot more fun than at the range.

From a distance- I love the SKS, although when I get closer, and start thinking about buying one, there's a few things that end up ticking me off, which ends up that I don't purchase it. What are these things?
Cosmoline. Now granted, its not that big a deal, since there is several ways of stripping this nuisance lubricant, but for me I like having the security with a firearm of being able to unbox it, do a quick teardown, and pack it up for a range day. With the cosmo, it becomes at least a full day affair removing that ****. But the cosmoline is the least of my woes, when it comes to these rifles.
The stock. Now maybe its just me, (and most likely is), but I find the wood stock that these rifles come with butt ugly. For me, I'd much prefer to have a black stock, maybe with a rail or two on it.

Maybe I'm just complaining. (And thats exactly what I'm doing) But can anyone reconfirm my faith in the SKS- and with the little free time I have- is it worth purchasing, just to spend another $200-$300 cleaning it up and replacing the stock?

Just buy one DJ and shoot it. You may not be impressed with its pizza box accuracy but it will .. guaranteed put a smile on youre mug.:)

hell, this is what i got for my little girl for her 12th brithday, she cleaned it up and then put 320 rds threw it! her first rifle but she's been shooting for 9 yrs. russian lam. want to ask her what she thinks? did i say she never shot a bb gun ever!

Laugh2 "Tacticrap" Laugh2
I love it.
People hang more crap off of their rifles than the actual weight of the rifle.
And they still can't hit the barn door from inside the barn.

I read this and I wonder, what does someone expect for next to nothing? Where can you buy a unissued or factory refurb for less than 200 bucks? ammo is at an all time availability with good prices. Nobody cares if someone had a thousand bucks to spend on a rifle, but stop #####ing about a good deal on an economical one.

As far as cosmoline, all milsurp rifles have cosmoline, millions of them. If you don't like getting dirty, then take up knitting, guns are not your thing.

the cosmo comes off in like 2 hours, not a full day. Throw some tunes on in the backyard and go crazy. It's cheap, easy to modify if you so choose, and fun as anything to shoot. You can hunt with it, or do some bayonet charges (also fun).

Does anyone know if the ammo deal is still on? Buy a crate of ammo, get an SKS for $79- then spend $100 on a new stock or whatever, and you still have the cheapest long gun in town.

Buy one and put some work into her. It'll give you some time to get to know the rifle. But above all else don't listen to anyone else about what to do with your gun. It's funny that this place is full of shooters complaining that the govt. is trying to tell us how to use our guns but it's somehow ok to tell another shooter what to do with theirs. If you want a 7 foot laser that makes kittens blind put it on. If you want a scope that can see pluto put it on. If you even want to dress like Costa himself, grow the beard and rape the Magpul website. Who cares it's your money.

If you want to keep the wood stock on by all means have fun with it. If you want to add some stuff by all means have some fun with it. Just keep in mind that if you keep your $200 russian refurb stock and keep it locked away for another 60 years it will more than likely be worth about $400. Not what I call a good investment when they made millions of them.

It's $160!!!!
Seriously?
Its a bang for your buck.... Personally I have one but I am not a big fan but so what?

Did I mention its $160?

Well said.

You'd have the time to clean cosmoline off a rifle if you took a break from posting videos of yourself doing odd things on YouTube.

The SKS is a beautiful rifle for $200. Well engineered. A piece of history. Functional and useable. Buy it, if you don't enjoy it, sell it. I've spent money on worse things.
