Sks

Hey , I just picket up a Norinco Sks and in my opinion theres nothing wrong with it at all, I really don't know the difference between a pinned barrel or whatever the other one is I have read people talk about but since I have had my NSks I have probably shot about 3000 rounds out of it and have had no problems , they are still kinda hard to find though it took me a while .
I think SIR Mail Order might still have some though.
Oh yea , and if you can find ammo for it , buy as much as you can cause it seems like its getting harder to get !!
Funnest gun i have ever shot too!

Buy a Chinese for 160 - 200 bucks, get a crate of Czech ammo and shoot the hell out of it. Russian SKS is great but the chrome bore of the Chinese makes it a perfect fit for a plinking gun, especially when you are shooting corrosive.

i would't waste your time looking for a russian sks u will have a hard time finding a new one and they run a steep price norincos are good quality and fraction of the price

i think SIR mail order has a few

x2 of holley man a case of czech ammo is a must just make sure u clean your gun after each range session

I love my Norinco and it shoots like a .22. For under $200 delivered to your door, you can't beat it. Try Elwood Epps, or Milarm. I just saw some last week with Norinco SKS's for either $169 or $179.

You must be joking. 7.62 X39mm ammo is almost as easy to find as .22LR!
Any SKS you buy will have the mag pinned already, obviously they need to, to make them legal. You can find SKS's anywhere, if you can't it's cuz you aren't looking. Most gun stores don't advertise them on their websites though, simply because;
A: they are usually less than $200, and
B: They are so easy to find.
Russian SKS rifles are harder to find though, and more expensive. I suggest getting a Norinco, they are reliable, accurate(ish) and cheap. If you like it, then worry about finding a Russian model.
Only one other thing, make sure you clean it every time you shoot, ESPECIALLY if you are firing surplus ammo. Surplus 7.62 is everywhere, but some of it has corrosive pyro in the primers, or in the powder itself, and that crap can turn a tack driver into a POS over night! I shoot surplus ammo with corrosive primers all the time, and have no problems, but I clean my guns religiously.
So be careful, but more importantly, have fun!
Cheers!
Tim

Hello,

I'm new to the world of guns and looking into picking up an SKS once I have my PAL.

Firstly, I've heard that the SKS, if it has a pinned 5-shot magazine, is allowed.

I've also heard that for build quality, none beat a Russian SKS.

I live in Mississauga, so are there any places I'd be able to buy a Russian-made SKS around here?

Buy online and don't worry (a number of businesses on the banner carry them). Russian SKS is hard to find. Also, check EE section, one might be listed there.

Remember to clean the gas piston area as well as the barrel after shooting corrosive ammo.

Cleaning is not a big deal. Boiling water down the barrel (use a funnel) so you don't scald your hand holding the rifle. Also clean the gas assembly on the top where the piston is located with hot water.
Then clean and oil as with any gun. 15 minutes or so will do it.

I agree with the other posters, simply buy a Chinese Norinco SKS for around $150 and case of ammo which is coming this month from Canadaammo.com (see banner at top of page).

A great choice for a first gun. Have fun!

Also when pouring boiling water down the gas piston tube watch out for the two little vent holes on the side...I always seem to forget about them and end up with boiling water on my foot. :D

yea theres tons of mods you can do with a sks to make it look really evil to you will have lots of fun

your best buy in a Chinese SKS is to find one built for the military. If there's a triangle mark on the left side of the receiver with a number in it, there's a good chance that the main components were made for the military. The receiver and trigger group and other major components will be numbered. The word Norinco will not be marked on any of the parts. These rifles cost the same as the later "commercial" SKS's and if you spend some time looking through a rack of rifles you'll usually find a couple. I'll agree with everyone else here, they are a good first rifle - simple to operate, reliable and accurate enough (just don't expect a long range precision rig) and the recoil won't turn you into a flincher. Actually, I think they are an essential, there's no excuse not to have one given their pricing.

Question about cleaning..

How often should a full-disassembly cleaning be done?

I figure I'd do a partial cleaning after every time the gun goes through more than a box of ammo.

If you're shooting corrosive, you need to clean everytime you shoot. Clean the bore, gas system and receiver and you'll be fine. It doesn't need to be detail stripped every time it's cleaned.
