I have a norinco SKS I bought new in `85. I`ve always taken care to clean it carefully after every use. I`ve put a 1000 rnds though it..maybe.
This spring I put a Choate "Dragunov" stock on it with a "Kalinka" side mount scope mount with a steel shell casing deflector. Now admitedly I cheaped out on the scope and put on a 6x24x40 Tasco Varminter scope. Right from the get-go it never did better than a 4" group at a hundred yards.
Yesterday at Genesee, I couldn`t hit a 1 foot by 1 foot square steel plate at 50 yrds!!!!
Before I went out I checked the scope mount..still tight, scope rings were tight..and then sh!t for accuracy. I "threw" the gun back in its case and when I got home I ripped off the stock and scope and put it back in its original wood.
I`ll try it again when I`m bored and have a quarter tank of gas to waste to see if it shoots better.
In the mean time I`m considering trying to recoup some of my money by selling the stock and scope mount as a package.
 
First off you need to cut yourself some slack.

Second the plastic Dragunov style SKS stocks are notorious for fitting funny, as every SKS is built slightly different, so it could be a bedding issue.

Also you failed to mention if you were shooting from a bench or not, and a properly used bench rest would make up for the difference in the new stock length, weight, and handling. Which from my experience with those stocks is significant.

And as you mentioned you have put maybe 1000 rounds thought the rifle in original form, so you could simply be used to this.

Even my GF who never shot a rifle before was getting better groups last weekend from the bench with my SKS, Iron sights and all.

It could also be an ammo quality issue.

But if you get sick of the side mount, and bracket PM me. :D

Reminds me my turmoil with one rifle I have, no matter what I did to it it shot shotgun pattern at 50 yards. When all options were exhausted I found out scope is junk, you almost need another little reticle to hold your eye in the same position all the time. Change scope ( just trade form other rifle for now) and see what it does.
 
With my new SKS off hand with irons sight I was getting 3" grouping at 50m keep in mind am a bad shot:)
I have tried scope mounts before and they never shoot as good as iron sights with the SKS.

99% of those 1000 rnds was through it with the original wood and iron sights with brass cased russian FMJ. (Hell, I bagged two whitetail deer in two seasons with this gun back in Ontario in the late 80s using Federal 123 Gr. SP ammo) The ammo I`m using this year is the steel cased czech stuff I bought from Milarm this past spring by the case.
The gun is equipped with a versa pod bipod and I was shooting from a bench rest.
When I installed the plastic all was tight and snug. There was an info sheet included detailing about the different makes of Sks. Included in the package was a small shim to take up the fore and aft movement between the receiver and stock. My setup had no movent back and forth hence the shim wasn`t needed.
Now, having said all this a small amount of movement is now apparent at the back of the receiver. It moves up and down in the stock about 1/16".
The receiver is held in the stock by the trigger assembly. Where would any shims go to take up that slack?

I put the plastic stock on simply because I hated the shortazz wood stock where my eye was almost touching the receiver cover.
 
Uhhh....gee, thanks for the advice gatehouse.

Its nice to see senior GN members offer freindly helpful advice like that to those newer members having trouble.
 
Rick one possibility is...

Looking at your SKS pic I can see where the attachment arm on your shell deflector on the vented Gas tube is touching the stock at the front, that little pinch point is all it would take to screw up your barrel harmonics, and your rifles bullet impact.

Check to see that your barrel floats from the receiver, only the receiver/trigger assembly should touch the stock...so methinks the shims are for the receiver area only.

You might want to consider doing a search on this board for bedding a rifle with that metal epoxy stuff, seems to have worked great for some on this board.

I've had similar experiences with a Choate Dragunov-style stock on an SKS. I've not been overly happy with any of the plastic stocks I've tried, regardless of the action type. They all seem to be sloppy, fit funny, etc.
 
Well, as we found at the range, your stock fit is really ####ty. That's absolutely positively guaranteed to result in problems. Shim it up nice and tight, and try it again. Or, try the wood stock again and see. Also I found with my sks that removing the oprod REALLY improved accuracy. 1/2" at 50 yards in straight-pull bolt mode, or about 2" in semi.

Also, at the range today, a fellow was playing with his m-14. Again, with the gas system off, he saw huge accuracy improvements.

And lastly, it's just a damn SKS. Don't expect anything better than 3 or 4 inches at 100 yards at best. Remember, people buy mini 14's and 30's for $600+ to get this kind of accuracy, so you're doing well if you can manage it with an SKS
 
Well, when I got home the first thing I did was take it all apart and stick it back in the original wood. Maybe I`ll try the "no op rod" trick and see what happens.
The plastic and the scope mount are shoved off in a corner somewhere.
 
You're better off to change one thing at a time so you know where the problem was. If you like the synthetic stock bed it to the rifle with Marinetex so bedding is taken care of. Shoot it like that and see, if it's not way better switch the optics while at the range. You don't really care where it shoots as long as the group is good (bring a big card board box)
