I just received my new purchase of an sks from Marstar,.. Im very pleased.

It seems like a very well made mass production rifle and perfectly preserved. The cosmo on it doesnt seem too bad to deal with at all.

Cant wait to shoot it after my case of ammo gets here.:D

I do have one question on the corrosive ammo though... after shooting it, how far do you have to go, to clean the gun?..

Does the piston, cylinder, or anywhere the gasses have been, need to be cleaned after every firing?.

Just thought I'd ask... to keep the rifle in top shape.

Yes, clean everything after shooting. Lots of threads on how to do it. Its no big deal, the rifle can be stripped in a minute or less once you've done it a few times.

I fired 160 rounds of corrosive through a new chinese SKS last weekend. That Czech ammo is dirty as ####e. Clean everything. Make sure you clean out the bolt, firing pin channel, etc... The firing pin should rattle back and forth with shaking the bolt vigorously.

X2 It can be stripped, cleaned and put back together in the time that it takes to have a beer. As for cleaning the cosmo (grease) take the rifle apart and clean as much as you can. If you miss some, it will ooze out when the rifle heats up from firing. Best to do it good the first time. The bolt should always rattle freely. This is a must.

What do you use to clean it, any specific product? Where do you buy it, or will Varsol work?

I used WD40 on mine, but many have used Varsol. Dismantle it completely and put some effort into it.
As for the corrosive ammo, boiling water does the trick. I was a bit nervous at first about pouring water on a rifle but it works great. Just dry it perfectly when done. Windex works too.

Clean it right away. Whatever you do, don't let it sit overnight and clean it in the morning. I did that once, and was horrified to see rust already on the gas piston and tube.

If I can't clean it the same day, I spray the crap out of it with WD40. The barrel, gas piston and gas tube are the problem areas. Some people use water, or windex, ect. It really doesn't matter as long as it removes the salts from the primers. I find the spray can of WD40 is the most convenient to use. When at home, I use Ed's Red for a complete clean. For about every case of ammo I use up, I'll give it a good bore clean with a product that clears up copper fouling.

There is nothing I need to do to this rifle that takes longer than the duration of a beer. There is very little difference in my methods that I would use for any rifle. Proper care only takes a few minutes.

I seem to have a stuck gas piston extension rod on my sks. I took the gun apart when i first got it and cleaned it, i took it to the range about 3 times before i took aprart agian for cleaning everything else came apart just fine but the gas piston extension rod wont move at all, my latch is in the correct postion to take it out, but it would not even depress down, has any one come across this, or has any ideas.

thanks

i can depress the gas piston extension rod now, but it still will not come out, i am sure that my latch is in the correct postion for removal, but still it will not come out.

Have you tried a small punch/drift to tap out the rod? By the way, that situation is why I run oil on all components of my sks's all the time. Some guys will say dry to avoid fouling but if your not on top of it the bugger will seize solid on you in a short period of time.Surplus ammo=elbow grease.

If you can depress the rod against the spring it isn't seized...are you SURE the release is up,you may have to fiddle with it a bit?

thanks plinker

i manged to tap it out, and cleaned the houseing, but it would not fit back in, i tried from the other side just to see if it would go in but agian no, i got the rod out of my other sks and it fit in just fine, so i am leaning toward filling down the tip of rod an making fit, any thoughts on that?

I just received my Chinese SKS from Marstar a month ago and now that Non-Corrosive ammo is available that is all i will shoot through it...i heard horror stories from a few guys i know that use the Corrosive ammo. So for me personally i am not going to take the chance and pay extra for the good stuff.

Your choice but you worry for nothing...The various story about corrosive ammo exist because peoples didnt clean their rifle properly. Its not long to clean a rifle, just do it right! Peoples really should stop thinking that when you shoot corrosive ammo, your gun will desintegrate right away. They are military rifle, they were made to shoot, corrosive or not. You will find load of info here about cleaning priocedure, plenty of good advices.:)
